reinstalling pclinuxos
« on: January 13, 2013, 11:57:38 AM »
hello, so I currently have an outdated version of pclinuxos and windows 7 on my laptop. i stopped using pclinuxos for a while because it was having problems with the internet while i was in another country, but now that i'm back i would like to install it again, and use it as my main operating system again

So since I have pclinuxos already, i have a bunch of partitions. I have just downloaded and burned the most recent ISO, 2012.12.
but my main question is when i do reinstall it, should i just wipe all of the other partitions that aren't for windows? I have 2 NTFS partitions, my main windows and recovery. i should leave those
but then i have 4 other partitions, it doesn't say what filetype in windows, but i can only assume they're ext4, or whatever pclinuxos is using, i'm not entirely sure actually.
the 4 partition sizes are 15GB, 12.01GB, 3.9GB, and 326.03GB
should i just partition all 4 of those and then install pclinuxos? thanks for your help

Run the liveCD and examine the partitions to see what is on them.

The installer will provide an option to format the partitions it will use .....  and you will know which ones after examining their contents.

Quite likely, as PCLOS was installed previously you have
a   /     partition
a  /home   partition
a Swap partition and
a Data partition

You may wish, after examining your partitions as Just17 suggests, to keep your /home partition from being reinitialized (thus preserving any existing user data there).  The tricky part here is that this also preserves configuration data.  This can be both good and bad - as systems move on, older config data can cause unexpected results.

Depending on how long it's been and what you want out of a new install, it might be better to use the opportunity a live boot provides for you to back up the /home partition to a removable drive somewhere and start fresh.  That way, you get to set up how you want the system to look and feel from scratch and may discover some things you didn't see last time.

Be sure to look and get the latest ISOs available, and to follow the instructions for obtaining a new sources.list file linked to from the main page at pclinuxos.com.

Good luck with the new install, and welcome back!
