« on: January 13, 2013, 08:45:28 AM »
IS there a way to be able to set up iso ( i dont mean copy paste)  files on a flash drive to be able to run games on dif pc? i mean similar to how you can use the flash drives to install OS like http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

If you mean should it be possible to run a game from a flash drive instead of from a CD, I would expect yes.

To try it you 'burn' the ISO to a suitably sized flash device using the 'dd' command.

Is that what you have in mind?

The general format of the dd command is

dd   if=/path/to/iso/filename.iso    of=/dev/sdZ                   where /dev/sdZ  is the flash device.

There is a great and serious danger .......  if you pick the wrong drive then you will wipe whatever drive you select and there will be no recovery.

So the first thing is to ensure that you can be certain the drive you are selecting is the USB flash drive.

This is a SERIOUS warning  ;)

doing the following command a few times as you insert and remove the flash drive (if you have automounting set up cancel it)

fdisk -l

You should see the flash drive being added to the end of the output of the command when run after inserting it .....  and not being present when not inserted.

Make certain you choose the correct drive and NOT the internal drive or another external one!

thank you for the warning and steps. i'll just not do this to be on the safe side

side question (which is really what lead me to wondering about installing the games on a flash drive and the other thread you helped on)

i just got steam to work with play on linux and i followed this link which was recommended  so that i can get direct x to install on wine
http://pclosmag.com/html/Issues/201107/page11.html

after i downloaded the game from steam and i try to install 1
i will get a fatal error message from wine (i posted the message on their forum as well)

"Fatal error
Failed to delay load library mscorlib.dll (win32 error:0).
This program can no longer run and will now terminate."

I am of no use with WINE ......  I don't use it or install it.

I would though draw your attention to the fact that Steam is being rolled out for Linux this year ..... but you are probably well aware of that and the fact that beta testing has been ongoing for some time.

Hopefully that will sidestep those Wine problems when Steam for Linux is generally available.

"mounting" is a process of attaching a path on one file system to a path on another file system.

Usually,it means attaching a file system on device on a file system in another device.

What you are trying to do is not "mounting",i believe a word is "imaging"
