There is a 5th dimension, beyond that which is known to man.It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity, between science& superstition,& it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call PCLINUXOS!

You'll do fine. I am sure your student will appreciate his teacher.

Thanks Joe.

I hope I can teach him "Theory".

From there, standard techniques are easy to learn.

Then, he should develop his own technique and learn to create.

That's the best I can do right?   :D

give him a couple of sticks, let him bang away for a bit, then show him how it's done.  theory is the boring bit.  learners need fun.

* Is the Student paying you ?

I've taught Guitar in the past and found I had to let the guy show me what he could do first, before teaching anything. Determine what the Student wants from you ? Just a suggestion.

If the student ends up being serious about this then I agree that teaching him theory will benefit him ten fold down the road.

Yes, I agree. Theory gives the tools to go on and keep growing, Rudge hasn't explained much of the situation as yet, but I'm sure he will.  ;D

First off we don't want to turn the student off, who if they've gone to all the trouble to arrange to have lessons from Rudge must be keen to learn how to play the drums... Exciting .

I think you'll need to assess your student by letting him/her play them while you watch, then assign tasks, then figure a study plan of Theory, and Performance.

A little bit of both during each lesson will help keep his interest.

I'm sure you can do an outstanding job!!!

Thanks for all the helpful information. ;)

I plan on starting him out on just the snare drum, teaching a combination of music theory and then percussion specific techniques. But also plan on setting aside some time at the end of each session for instructions on the kit and just letting him whale on it in whatever way he feels fit.

That way he can learn, have fun and also get familiar with how it feels to sit on that throne. So when we move on to it, it will already feel familiar.

Thanks for the support everybody.    ;D

Jaydot has a point.

I have always taken quickly to anything that I put my hands or eyes to.  Being dyslexic and all...

back in my teens I had a natural talent for picking up the beat of a song. 1-in-3, one 1-in-4... I friend (Charles)had a drum set, and played for a local band.  I sat down at his drum set and started to drum stuff from my head.

He stopped me and asked if this was seriously the first time I was ever on I drum set.  I said yes.

Yahhh, I'm still a finish carpenter...................

From what I have seen Sammy, you are better at "Finnish Carpentry" than I am at playing the drums.  ;)

So Rudge, give us some feedback if you're up to it after the first lesson. Would be interested how it goes.

The more I think about playing Drums the more complex they seem. I've played them just by feel jamming with a guitarist and felt good. I've also seen Video of advanced Drummers explaining advanced stuff, and doing it and felt really intimidated.  ;)

Anyway be an interesting project for sure.
