Java question

Just concluded option 3 of the repo update "Synaptic file/software update report" and then ran updates to the machine, which updated Firefox, among others.
I had previously disabled Java in FF, but the version installed now is 1.6.0_38.  The NBC-TV news report tonite says to disable Java in the browser, IAW US govt. security advisory.
Do I need to disable this version?  If/when I do, what will stop working?

I thank you for the information.  I  have of course disabled it.  What will I find not working?

I found I had some version of FF on my Windows 7 machine that had no apparent input to customize or install/disable anything!  There was no way I could see to find
out if Java was there or enabled or not, so I removed FF from Win7 altogether.  (I seldom use Win7, and even less frequently go to the net from there, but better
safe than sorry, they say.)   A word on disabling Java in such a Win FF would be passed on to my friends who might be using it. The MS browser does not appear to have
Java, or I'm not looking at it right.
