Jut wanted to check back in and report that, so far, all is well.:)  My system is still working.:)  I haven't rebooted since all you folks helped get it back up and running.  I'll give this a go in a moment.  I've just checked PCC and my video card settings are the same as when I issued changed via XFdrake (thanks, JohnW and thanks to Tex....OP, DeBaas...did I miss anyone???:):)).  so, I guess a reboot will be successful.:)

Again, my sincere thanks to everyone on this forum for their help.:)

Here's the cool thing.  Even though my system's GUI was down, I was still able to pop in the Live CD, open my folders on my HD, move files over to my USB drive, and then move these to my Lenovo Notebook.  I never missed a beat in getting my work done because I had a fully compatible working PCLinuxOS system.  and, even if i didn't' have that notebook, I still had the ability to get work done using that Live CD.:)  This is something I never would have been able to do had I been running a Windows system.  And just a side note, this sytem is a rack system.  I do have Windows XP on a hard drive.  But, I never plugged it in.  It's been a couple of years since I booted that drive.  Had I plugged it in, I know it would still be updating.:):);D  So, it was nice not needing Windows as a crutch.:)  And this has been the goal all along...get rid of Windows.:)

As most of you know, I'm more a PCLinuxOS user than I am a programmer/techie.  As a cartoonist, I use PCLinuxOS to help edit and produce all my cartoon work.  I also use it for my personal finances and at the office for all internet work.  So I appreciate your patience with me as a wade through the weeds of punching in Konsole commands and trying to understand what is taking place.  I'm learning, over the long haul, little by little.  I'm not sure I'll ever get to the level of many on this forum, so I'm thankful for you guys being there when I need the occasional help with a major system failure.:)

As to this thread, I'm not sure if I should mark it solved or not.   My system is running, but not because of the Nvidia driver.  So, I'll just defer to what the consensus is on this.

The nouveau driver is for me a workaround.
If you're satisfied with the driver you can use it.
But the issue with nvidia 173 driver needs to be solved (it's only on PASS atm).
Just waiting for more test results for this nvidia 173 driver.
It needs to be fully working for everybody!

@JohnW_57
Replaced ATI RV350 [Radeon 9600] with NVIDIA  NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]
Standard installed 173.14.31-1 worked, after one reboot, out of the box.
173.14.36-1 (only on PASS now) is a nono.
If you want xorg.conf31 and xorg.conf.36, later ;) have to switch PC's

Back to the old 173.14.31-1 version for now from the nluug repo.

@Georgetoon
If you want to go back to the former driver,
now you are on the Nouveau driver it's easy to remove the dkms-nvidia173 and x11-driver-video-nvidia173 completely from Synaptic.
Switch to the nluug repo, switch off PASS and install dkms-nvidia173 version 173.14.31-1
Now you can go back to PASS, but before updating take care to switch off the update from the 173.14.36-1 version files.

Thanks.:)  I just rebooted and everyting came right up.:)  Those two spinning circles were a welcome sight!:)

The Nouveau driver works for now. I think I'll keep with it until I see a shortcoming. Thank you for the path to get back the old driver. However, how do I switch off an update?  I've never done that before. Is this the same as pinning?

Mark all updates,
go down to the nvidia files and unmark them.
now apply.
If you do not need the extra graphicall power stick to the nouveau driver till things sort out ;)

pinning would indeed kept the package from being updated.

I was working in Gimp and some routines had a bi of lag.

I can wait.  In the meantime, I think I'll visit newegg.com and start going through hardware for a new box.:)  If I get nice tax refund, I'll use that for the upgrade.:)

Yes to all.:) My nephew is an IT guy.  He works in the field and built a very nice office computer for the family business.  All components were purchased from Newegg.  I'll be running ideas past him.  However, it all depends on his schedule.

But this is a couple of months down the road.  Doesn't hurt to start looking now. :)  Until then, spare box runs fine.:)  I can also grab my main  main box.  It's just not handy ATM.

I get those special emails daily, and follow prices on parts I know I will want, waiting to grab the lowest price on each specific item. So far, the only one I missed was a Seagate 3 TB internal hard drive for $89.99 on Black Friday, because I was looking for, and got, my Asus 23" monitor then. If I had seen the 3 TB for that price I would have certainly bought it. Knowing that they did offer it at that price once, I'm now waiting to see if they make that same offer again. They usually do. I may have to wait until the next Black Friday, but I'm in no hurry.  ;D

I bought a 2 TB Seagate for the same $89.99 at Newegg, using the Promo code, then had a friend stop by the next day, who asked if I would order one for him too. On trying that, I was informed the Promo code could only be used once, and even though the posted limit was 3, and the sale was still on, once the Promo code was used, any additional purchases would be at $109.99. I cancelled the Newegg purchase, then checked Amazon, and was able to get the same hard drive for the same $89.99 price, without any Promo codes, and no posted limits. As soon as the Newegg offer expired, the following day, the Amazon price reverted to the higher price also. I got a Logitech wireless mouse from Amazon for $7.00 less than the same model from Newegg, and an ORICO cloning docking station for $10.00 less than Newegg, because I usually check both sites before making the actual purchase.

Most times Newegg, with their Promo codes, has the lowest price at that given time, and I've bought a lot from Newegg because of them. Two weeks ago I got a new MS Natural 4000 keyboard, as a backup for my favored 1999 Natural Keyboard Elite version, for $19.99 + free shipping, with a Promo code, which was cheaper than the lowest cost used one + shipping costs on eBay.

By buying each part separately, over time, as they were offered with Promo codes, I got exactly the parts I wanted, and saved over $150.00 on my last rebuild of my current computer.

I have not read the entire thread, so hopefully this isn't redundant. I sent the new nvidia173 driver to Neal's dropbox, but neglected to tell him to keep it in testing. There are some needed changes to the existing driver to get the dkms module to build with the new test kernel. I don't have an nvidia card to test, so it needs to stay in testing. I believe Neal will have the old driver back in main for a little while until the bugs get worked out. My apologies for the inconvenience.  :-[

No problem.:)  It happens.:)  You guys have a lot on your plate and juggle quite a it to keep this distro going.:)  I appreciate the hard work.:)

And the upside is, I learned a little bit more about Linux.:)

So, wil these drives be taken out of PASS?  If so, I'll back to the original drivers (without fear of updating again) as described by DeBaas:

Two weeks ago I got a new MS Natural 4000 keyboard, as a backup for my favored 1999 Natural Keyboard Elite version, for $19.99 + free shipping, with a Promo code, which was cheaper than the lowest cost used one + shipping costs on eBay.

By buying each part separately, over time, as they were offered with Promo codes, I got exactly the parts I wanted, and saved over $150.00 on my last rebuild of my current computer.

Sweet!  Thanks for this info as I'm starting to look for parts.:)  Gonna email my nephew now:) he subscribes to newegg, as well.:) I'll make sure he gets those promo codes.:)  Well, he's always pointing them out to me.:)

@Georgetoon

Well, I reconsidered and decided to give this a try.  nluug repo is unreachable right now.

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.
