(SOLVED. Thank you!) Crashed. Now only Localhost login
« on: January 12, 2013, 10:19:45 AM »
was working in Scribus just now and my system locked up.  completely froze.  I did do an update today.

Anyhow, it would not respond to REISUB or a simple Ctrl Alt Backspace. So, I ht the reset button.  the system booted bu the GUI grub menu does not come up.  All I get is a prompt.

Can someone please tell me how to get back to the GUI login screen?

Oky, i did a google search.  I logged in, issued su and then from root prompt issued startx.  I'm getting a Fatal server error no screens found.  In addition, it says, "failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist."  I did do n update today that had an nvidia update.

You may have a corrupted file system that needs to be repaired.

login at the console as root with your root password then

type: touch /forcefsck press enter
type: reboot press enter

When rebooting press the esc key to watch it as it scans your filesystem.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Okay.  Ran as instructed.  Still taking me to localhost login.  I did not see any errors reported as it ran fsck.

Maybe the nvidia kernel driver did not install properly. You can try at the root login prompt

type: rpm -e dkms-nvidia-current

then type:  apt-get install dkms-nvidia-current

Did you get any errors when it rebuilt the nvidia kernel driver?

If not then you can try to reset your xorg.conf file.

[root@thenudiebar ~]# rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
rm: remove regular file `/etc/X11/xorg.conf'? y
[root@thenudiebar ~]# XFdrake --auto
[root@thenudiebar ~]# startx

Unable to connect to X server.
Again, failed to load Nvidia module does not exist.

For some reason it sounds like your video card doesn't like the updated nvidia drivers. Lets try to back down to the previous version.

[root@thenudiebar ~]# apt-get remove x11-driver-video-nvidia-current

Cleaning up / removing
  dkms-nvidia-current-304.51-1pclos2012. ############################## [100%]
  x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-304.51 ############################## [100%]
Done.

[root@thenudiebar ~]# wget -c http://pclinuxos.fi/pub/linux/2010/RPMS.nonfree/dkms-nvidia-current-290.10-1pclos2011.i586.rpm

[root@thenudiebar ~]# wget -c http://pclinuxos.fi/pub/linux/2010/RPMS.nonfree/x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-290.10-1pclos2011.i586.rpm

[root@thenudiebar ~]#  rpm -Uvh *nvidia*

Did all that exactly.  Rebooted.  Still getting only a prompt.
