For some reason it sounds like your video card doesn't like the updated nvidia drivers. Lets try to back down to the previous version.

[root@thenudiebar ~]# apt-get remove x11-driver-video-nvidia-current

Cleaning up / removing
  dkms-nvidia-current-304.51-1pclos2012. ############################## [100%]
  x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-304.51 ############################## [100%]
Done.

[root@thenudiebar ~]# wget -c http://pclinuxos.fi/pub/linux/2010/RPMS.nonfree/dkms-nvidia-current-290.10-1pclos2011.i586.rpm

[root@thenudiebar ~]# wget -c http://pclinuxos.fi/pub/linux/2010/RPMS.nonfree/x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-290.10-1pclos2011.i586.rpm

[root@thenudiebar ~]#  rpm -Uvh *nvidia*

Did all that exactly.  Rebooted.  Still getting only a prompt.

When you installed the dkms  rpm did you get this at the end of the install?

DKMS: install Completed.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Pretty sure because the prompt came back up.

Have you Midnight Commander installed?

Su to root
Start Midnight Commander: type "mc" (without the quotes)
Go to /etc/X11
Locate the xorg.conf file
Delete the xorg.conf file
Exit Midnight Commander

Type XFdrake and go to the nvidia driver you want and save it.

Then reboot your system.

How?  Scratching my head.  It's a fresh install just last week.  All I did was update this morning and then installed Wine.

Don't know, never seen this before!
Never met this issue.
Suggestions from Texstar and my suggestion solves this issue mostly.

Have no logs from your install to look at it.

If you want to try getting to the gui with the standard xorg driver then remove the 2 nvidia-current packages, remove the xorg.conf file. Reboot then run XFdrake --auto and startx. From there it will be easier to work with to determine if your kernel sources are pointing to the correct folder in order for dkms-nvidia to successfully build the nvidia driver.

1. Did you read the pre upgrade messages in Synaptic, particularly about any removed packages?

2. Is your graphics card one of those that now use the newest legacy driver?

3. Have you run PCC --> Hardware --> Configure Video Card to setup the correct nvidia driver, since the last upgrade?

4. Have you shut down your machine, opened it, and checked all of your connections, re seating all add in cards, cable connections at both ends, as well as re seating your RAM modules?

The liveCD working doesn't insure that the hard drive connections are solid, only that the optical drive connections are good. Check them all while you are in there. I just did this last Thursday, before installing another new hard drive.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

I did miss the message about legacy drivers.  Gonna check it out after reinstall and before I upgrade. That's probably my error.

I'm doing a reinstall from the Live CD.  Everything is seated properly.

Reinstalling now.  I want to thank everyone for all thier help.  My apologies for not holding up my end and geting thos esolutions to work.

the upside is, I partitioned things correctly and saved /home.:)  I'll issue a chown so my new user account can get access to my old user account and move things over.  I'll delete the other guest accounts and create new ones.:)

Easy Peasy.:)  So, all my work and files are intact (I backed up, too).

And I'll make sure to read those notices in Synaptic.:)

I back up.  I have my PASS code inserted into sources and I'm gonna do a big update.  However, i created a new user account and forgot to give this new user a new ID number. it's the same as the old account.  I have access to the ld user account's files.  Can't remember is this is good or bad.
