Canoscan 9000F not configured.
« on: January 11, 2013, 04:03:30 PM »
I just purchased a Canoscan 9000F after checking SANE to ensure it's compatibility. After connecting it to PCLOS it is "seen" but not in the database. On SANE's website it shows this scanner as completely compatible. Can anyone help with this? Thanks.

I wish you luck! I have a CanoScan8400F which I have never been able to get working under Linux; and boy have I tried!

I used to bug the heck out of Canon Support trying to shame them into offering Linux support; they would refer me to the SANE Project website or suggest VueScan ( paid -- shareware software)

See here:  http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/canon_9000f.html

I did give VueScan a try over a year ago but was unable to get all the functions that I was used to under Windows XP and with Adobe Photoshop Elements.

I was just too frustrating, and I really need to use the scanner.

I do a lot of photo/slide/negative scanning and maintain a Windows machine almost exclusively for scanning and playing a few games.

If you are able to get a free trial version of VueScan to work; I'd be interested to know how you fare.

I'm rootin' for ya.  :)

Thanks for the link and suggestion. I went to that page and it specifically supports Windows and Mac with no linux support.
Which leaves me back at square one. If other distros are able to use this device then why not PCLOS? Again I point to the SANE website which says this unit is completely supported: CanoScan 9000F    USB    0x04a9/0x1908    Complete    Full flatbed support up to 4800DPI (Note: flatbed does not have 9600DPI capability). Full TPU support (negatives and slides) up to 9600DPI.

Update: I went to the VueScan website and there is now a Linux version of VueScan which I d/l and installed. It looks good and recognizes my scanner. Unfortunately there is no "trial" or 30 day version. The features are disabled unless you buy it for $39.95. I was really hoping that I could try before I buy but no dice. For now I'm pondering whether to keep fighting with configuring it on PCLOS or just purchasing VueScan. After researching the trial version it appears that all features function but with watermarks unless you buy it. Right now no functions work at all and I'm unsure why. In the meantime I emailed the author and asked why it won't work even though it shows the 9000F as input.

Hi, as you say 9000f is supported by sane whereas 8400f is not.

I'm following you thread as I'm having similar problems with an HP Scanner

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,113094.0.html

have you tried

sane-find-scanner

and

scanimage -L

from command line?

No Linux driver for that one the canon support site as well. Does not look good.
What you could do is run a Windows in VurtualBox and install the scanner there. Through networking you can reach each and all files in your user account and place any file there. rather easy as a work around and you never have to leave Linux or reboot.   (Done so for a few years)

I second that suggestion, until you can find the proper files for using the scanner natively on PCLinuxOS.

I have an Epson all-in-one that will never have Linux drivers for the scanner. I run a Win2K VM in VirtualBox, with the Epson Windows drivers and Epson scan application installed, and save the scans to a directory shared between the Linux host and the VM. I can then process the scans with appropriate Linux apps. Scanning with the all-n-one is literally the only use I have for the Win2K VM, and it doesn't require rebooting.

The Canon was broken and I returned it. Since the replacement was on back order I asked to send a Epson V500 instead thinking that Avasys/Epson drivers and other required software would allow me to use that under PCLOS. I was sadly mistaken although it will work natively with Vuescan ($40). Since I have VM and Win 7 I configured it with VM and it works fine. A bit inconvenient but at least now it works. A Canon LiDE 200 which I already had works great with XSane and does a fine job. I bought the Epson to scan color slides which the Canon can't do. BTW even though the Canon isn't in the PCLOS hardware database it easily configured and hasn't missed a beat.

Are there Linux drivers available for the Epson scanner at the avasys site? If there are, and they install with our current kernels, you should be able to get the scanner working natively. The only scanner I've ever had that I couldn't get working natively is the one for which Epson has never issued a Linux driver.

Yes. I previously had an Epson V350 that I used natively by installing the Epson drivers and other files from the Avasys site and they're supposed to work with the V500 but no joy. The repo has the same (outdated) files and I tried using them too but again, no joy. This software is supposedly compatible with several distros including PCLOS but I couldn't get it to work. As I mentioned, Vuescan worked natively once I installed the Avasys files but not so with PCLOS. I posted a new topic in the desktop hardware section asking for help but after 2 days of no replies I removed it. PCLOS recognizes the scanner but only that it's a Epson scanner and nothing more. Thankfully I have VBox installed and can use the scanner under Windows but it would be nice to run it natively. BTW I tried the newest kernel (testing) and a previous kernel but it made no difference.

Installing the driver and actually loading the module are two different things. With my Epson printer driver, for the same all-in-one for which Linux scanner drivers were not issued, I had to run an Epson command line command to get the printer working natively on Linux. Did you read the README file from the scanner driver download, and follow all the instructions?

No. I merely followed the same procedure that I used when installing the same files previously when I was using the V350, thinking that if it worked for the V350 it should work with the V500. Yes, this was a couple of years back and the files are updated from back then. Too, the older files are in the repository and I even tried using them to no avail. I will uninstall the Epson software then read the read me files from Avasys and try again. Thanks for your feedback.

Ok. I removed ALL related software and unplugged the scanner. Then I re-installed the software again and PCLOS recognized it but wouldn't configure it, telling me that it failed to open the device. I thought about it for awhile and concluded that the only thing I hadn't done was to reinstall the iscan plugin gt x770. Once i did that I started XSane and it WORKS. Even though I'm not sure what caused the original problem it now works. There is now joy! OP I appreciate your suggestion that the software install may have been the culprit. Thank you!

Been there, done that. I dicked around with the printer for a couple of hours the first time I installed the drivers, before doing a step by step run through of the README file I got, found the one liner about the command, and had it up and running in about one minute after doing that. As the saying goes, the devil is in the details.  ;D

My theory is that when I installed the Epson software the scanner was already plugged in and it shouldn't have been. Too, if you try to install IScan before installing the data package first it won't let you install it. Secondly the plugin was removed but not reinstalled today which kept giving me a "failed to open device....invalid argument. Once the plugin was installed I no longer got that message and the device was fully functional. In any case it is now working and I'm relieved. BTW I'm puzzled as to why my post on the Epson went unanswered. It's not often that a moderator doesn't respond in some fashion to a new topic,  especially when it's up for 2 days. Lucky for me the thread crossed over to here and I was able to solve it.
