The flu shot this year is about 60% effective against the current strain however simply washing your hands frequently during the day is 51% effective against getting the bug.

Just a heads up on cold-sore's,the moment i feel cold-sore on my lip i dab it with a good quality aftershave and repeat process during the day, the aftershave dries it up before it forms ;)

sammy2fish,

Sorry to hear that you've picked up the flu bug. I've heard reports down here that the Canadian hospital emergency rooms are just packed with flu patients, from coast to coast. I've also heard that in the Chicago area (where I used to live and work), some of the hospitals are setting up "tents" outside to contain all of those who are coming in with flu symptoms.

Unfortunately, riding it out and trying to minimize the symptoms is about all you can do. Even Tamiflu, heavily marketed in TV ads at this time of year, is only able to reduce the duration of symptoms by only a couple of days. Given the cost of Tamiflu, I'd rather ride out the extra couple of days. It's also unfortunate that this year's "seasonal flu vaccine" doesn't cover the strain that is now at epidemic proportions. They certainly missed the mark on "guessing" which of the flu viruses to target with this year's vaccine. And yes ... that is what they do ... they literally guess at which ones to include, long before it's known which one will actually pose to be most virulent and prevalent.

A "pleasant" medicine:  (Forget the pils)

Daily

- Sqeeze one citrus and put the juice in a heat resistant glas or large cup.
- Add a double shot of either Whiskey or Cognac (the "pleasant factor")  ;D
- Fill up with hot water
- Taste up with quite some honey
- Stir well

Drink as warm as you can stand.

After a few days you regret the flu is gone and this medicine isn´t needed anymore ...  :D

Get well soon!

Seems good, the "Taste up with some honey" part could be a problem, I don't think my wife likes the idea  :-\

Actually, this Saturday it has started leaving a bit.

My head and eyes only ache a bit, and the endless coughing seems almost gone.

Still will be taking NyQuil Cold & Flu, and a painkiller.... just to make sure I get a night's sleep.

I might get my wish, that I can get back to work on Monday morning.

Tents are also being set up at hospitals out here too to handle flu patients. link to story

Yah.......  I don't much like anything that tastes like honey.

We'll see Sunday morning.

I like the sound of those ingredients  ;D Yum, Yum.

Woh, the Flu. Two years ago I had the (Swine ? - very hush, hush for some reason  ???) Flu and developed Asthma, and was constantly on Antibiotics. I had that Tamiflu stuff initially. Man, it was bad for two weeks, and threw some other Respiratory problems which were minor into a chronic state.

I'm sure people moving around on Airplanes all over the World with strains of Flu has a lot to do with these Super Flu's.
When Captain Cook travelled the seas discovering 'New Lands', Flu's from the crew, plus Syphilis, and other diseases almost wiped out whole races, in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji. They also became Alcoholics, the Natives having no resistance. "The Fatal Impact" (Book) of European exploration.

Eventually after 14 months on Antibiotics, I had a Sinus opertation, september 2012, which has sorted me out.

If you are prone to weak immune system, or have an existing problem, Flu's can exasperate other probs; such as my Sinuses were totally infected, and blocked by Polyps, which had to be removed.

I have a 200ml bottle given post OP that I still use to rinse Sinuses with sterile (boiled) water, plus salts.
Called a Nasal Toilet, hehe.
Boil water, let it cool. Add sachet of salts, and cool water to plastic bottle with a screw on plastic nozzle.
Put nozzle up nostril while leaning over sink, squeeze bottle and water goes up and comes out the other Nostril. Looks bizarre but is great to wash all pollens and crap out of head.
Good when you've Flu to get all that infected crap outa your head too.
May sting a bit, so a swig of that 'One Night Cough Syrup' could be handy.

Asthma now has gone, as the Sinuses were infecting my chest.

The place I live has some of the worst allergies in the world, which apparently is why from time to time I get run down, and miserable. A backlash from invading a foreign country, and killing off most of the population ?

We aren't acclimated, climatised, to the pollens in Australia as yet, well a lot of people aren't.

I do have the Flu shot each year, but luckily don't get symptons.

Allergies to pollen Tony?  I've found useful a daily teaspoon of honey from the same area where we live, it works like the vaccines since provides very little pollen each day.

Give it a try.... if you're not diabetic, of course  :)

I've heard that before Crow, and I have meant to try it as it somehow makes a lot of sense. Thanks for suggesting, and saying it has helped you.
I'm not Diabetic, thank God.
