fexible screen? you need flexible corning willow glass
« on: January 11, 2013, 08:19:26 AM »
"LAS VEGAS--There's no question that flexible screens are the future, along with the bendable products that go with them. Corning, maker of Gorilla Glass 3, was kind enough to drop by our CNET booth at CES to show me Willow Glass, its take on bendable glass so thin you can curve it in a deep arc without breaking.

Willow Glass is as thick as a business card -- only 0.1 millimeter thick -- and as malleable as promised. I could easily bend it within its plastic laminate cover, but at this early stage in development, I wasn't able to handle the bare glass.

Manufacturers who use the glass in future products will be able to spool the material and bend it around displays, like smartphones, for example."

the flexible screen

"The screens, which were shown off here as just a concept, promise to change what kind of form factors are possible for companies that make smartphones and  tablets.

Samsung brought out a handful of demo units around 5-inches in size to show press, including a phonelike device with a screen that wraps around the side edges and could therefore display information like text messages and other alerts without a user needing to view the entire screen. A similar design puts the wraparounds on the bottom, while another concept (shown off in a video) rolled out like a scroll."

so, a bendable smartphone is not that far away after all, how long before we see the first unit?

Pardon me for my ignorance, but why would we need a bendable cellphone?  The circuit board would have to be bendable too.

I could see bending a large screen.........

there are prototypes of bendable pcbs, bendable batteries too, people were speculating that samsung galaxy s4 could come in may with those two technologies(bendable screen and bendable glass), making it alot more resistant

a bendable screen and a bendable protective glass will make any device more resistant to accidental pressures like sitting on your 7" tablet or letting fall your 5.5" phone/tablet to the floor

the idea of a e-paper, big and cheap enough to make newspaper viable again or a entire wall converted into a tv is now completely possible

I'd love to see netbooks. tablets, phones, etc., with "roll out" screens.  As seen in a couple of sci-fi films.  Maybe better yet, holographic projection screens.

Or like the roll-out screen those guys used on the movie Red Planet..

that is now a possibility

one question would be how long can such screen can last, months, years?

a phone with 7" screen that can be rolled into something smaller could be perfect for a incredible number of users

And immensely accelerate the merger of tablets and phones.

galaxy note already made that possible, but no other company has made a movement into hat direction, samsung is alone there for the moment, but they are doing so much to make the idea work that eventually many of us, like i or not, will eventually use a phablet(smartphone/tablet)

with this idea in mind, desktops and big laptops will have a rough competition ahead
