Doesn´t surprise me. The world want Windows, right?
Windows phones WILL be big based on the above and .... a large marketing budget.
I wonder most about what takes it so long ....

I agree with this. So many people only know windows. They hear windows phone and that eases their mind.

What is there to get excited over?  Sheesh doing good for one quarter doesn't mean squat...... Let them do this over several quarters and it might be impressive.... Come on in their 3rd quarter they lost $775 million.   No matter how good they think they are doing, this is nowhere close to the sales of Android or iPhone, and most likely never will be.  This is nothing more then a drop, in the bottom of the bucket.

Way to go Nokia, but your sales still are not all that impressive.  But I guess when you have done so poorly for so long any positive change, no matter how big, looks good.

But that is 86.3 million of whatever sitting on a shelf. They claim to have sold 4.4 million. A big difference.

$86.3 million doesn't even make a good dent in the loss of the $775 million in their previous quarter.

Sold them or had them issued with phone contracts to people that didn't know any better or needed the 2 years to pay the discounted product dumping price?  How many went over the counter as a sale of a phone?  ::)

I am aware they are going to throw out numbers to mask the mess they are in.

However I dislike him for his infamous 'burning platform' memo and for dumping my beloved Symbian / MeeGo OSes, I believe Elop has brought a degree of transformation in Nokia. He has cut a lot of deadwood. I am not very sure how much of freshness he has added. Still things are better looking now than before.

Windows Phone 7 was probably not a full fledged smartphone at all even though people claimed it to be. Symbian was much more feature rich. But this Windows Phone 8 seems to be a better contender in all. We should not deride it just because it comes from Microsoft.

Windows Phone was missing some good hardware (brought in by Nokia now) and it has also managed to license the whole Nokia Map suite for all of it (not only Nokia phones) which are very good positives there.
Lack of applications were an important negative aspect for it. This surely will change. The sheer number of sheep who have on their hands Windows Phone due to any reason (carrier induced or automatic or voluntary) will create more incentive for developers to join the platform.

Corporate backing. The whole Windows ecosystem is somewhat propped up by the conservative corporates. (Sometimes even heldback)
They are definitely going to love Windows anything to go with their desktop / laptop Windows. It is similar to the effect in Mac universe. You get one gadget, the other one will be more attractive.

I believe Nokia was done-in by its management rather than any lack of technical prowess. Hopefully things have changed under Elop.

ALT : I am also hopefully following JollaMobile. They look like a better fit for an open source person than any other OS on the horizon at present.
Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(
