Wine User Specific?
« on: January 09, 2013, 12:17:46 PM »
I've checked my system and wanted to double check up here.

Wine installs system wide, but when you use Wine to install a Windows program, that installation is only user specific, correct?

So, if John installs Internet Explorer via Wine to his user account, it's only available o his account.  Another user won't see IE in his own user account.

That's exactly what I see on my system. Each user has a separate .wine folder which contains all user-specific configurations and the whole windoze folders (system32, Program File, etc.).

So a win program I installed for my wife wasn't available for me, I would have had to install it again under my account if I wanted to use it also.

Thanks.:)  I was curious about seeing if PhotoShop CS2 would install and run under Wine. Adobe is giving it away for free.  Even though I'm a Gimp user, I wanted to see how it performs.

I can create a new user account, and install it there.  That way, I'm not trashing my user account.:)

I might be mistaken but, doesn't it ask if you want for all users or just you when you
install a program.

The photoshop installer may offer that option, but tschommer is correct. Wine sandboxes all installed programs into the users .wine directory. It looks like real windows to each program installed, but it's just a trick. ;D

Interesting. Can you give me some more details?
I'm curious also :)

Sorry to disappoint you George, but seems that Adobe is not giving any of its programs for free:

I'm not disappointed.:)  Gimp does everything I need.:)  I was curious, though, to see if PhotoShop would run under Wine and try some of its features. No matter.:)

Totally agree. Only thing currently missing from Gimp is proper CMYK support.

If you want to see how Photoshop is doing under Wine check this link:

And to check other applications' compatibily with Wine:

Thanks.:)  Looks like PS CS2 and 7.0 run quite well under Wine.:)  I'd guess that newer versions don't do as well.

gizmodo is saying the same

From gizmodo

Update: Adobe’s suffering server issues with the sheer number of people trying to download CS2 — it’s effectively being DDoS — so give it a while.

Update 2: Looks like Adobe didn’t actually mean to release CS2 for free to the entire world, even though it didn’t say anything, and still doesn’t, on the download site about it. And there we thought Adobe’s fail was a late Christmas present and all.

http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2013/01/grab-photoshop-and-cs2-for-absolutely-free-right-now/

I checked the  Adobe download link given by gizmodo and it has lot's of applications to download along with serial numbers

The download page is  here

but written by a Community Admin on the adobe forum

Effective December 13, Adobe disabled the activation server for CS2 products and Acrobat 7 because of a technical glitch. These products were released over 7 years ago and do not run on many modern operating systems. But to ensure that any customers activating those old versions can continue to use their software, we issued a serial number directly to those customers.  While this might be interpreted as Adobe giving away software for free, we did it to help our customers.
