the linux steam box
« on: January 08, 2013, 07:16:26 AM »
"Gabe Newell's already expressed his less-than-positive sentiments on the Windows 8 ecosystem. So it's really not much of a surprise that the Steam Box, Valve's own take on the game console, is going to be Linux-based.

According to Valve electronics engineer Ben Krasnow, who hosted a talk at a conference in December, Valve's got quite a few things to reveal in the coming years. Besides confirming the existence of the Steam Box and that it's going to be based on Linux—making it a lot more clear as to why Valve's taken such an interest in Linux recently, such as porting Steam to Ubuntu."

from what I've been reading, it's not just valve porting games to Linux.

Also EA, Blizzard, and another I cannot remember are thinking about it too.

It looks like the whole game software industry is slowly dipping a toe in, to test the waters.

Lets hope enough Linux users buy the games.

Main machine Amd Phenom II, 4gb ram, 500gb wd hard drive, radeonHD 4200
PCLinuxOS 2011.6 KDE
Jukeboxmachine, AMD singlecore 3.2ghz, 1gb ram, 160gb wd +80gb wd hard drives, PCLinuxOS 2011.6 KDE mini, hooked up to an old (1980's) JVC stereo amp and 1970's Kef Choral speakers, sounds good to me ;0)

if everybody supports it, it can be as fast as android progress, 2 years or less

games represent the last strong point windows had on its side, a steambox running linux and only linux games, will mean the death of windows as entertainment os, will leave it just with unfriendly printers, scanners and not that common applications for specific hardware
