I did a good cleaning this weekend
Also used memtest (left if overnight - did 76 passes) and no problems occured with the memory modules.
But the problem still remains. Sometimes the computer refuses to start even after 4 or 5 retries...

So I'm going for a new PSU at first and if this doesn't fix things I'm also buying a new mainboard (found one with socket 775 supporting DDR2+DDR3 and my processor at around 55euros - Gigabyte G41M Combo).

Thanks everyone for the help and the tips!

Just for the heck of it, did you run fsck (file system check) on that disk (HDD) ?

Now that you've mentioned it, I remember I had to run fsck on that disk in the past because I couldn't get to the desktop. Don't remember what exactly was the problem, but I'm sure it happened only once and probably because my younger son didn't properly shut down the system.

I will give it a go... nothing to lose :)

Problem solved by replacing the motherboard.
Couldn't find one supporting my processor (Core2Duo E6300) with DDR2 slots so I had to buy a new 2GB DDR3 module too.
Seems to be a little faster now. Cost: 60 euros :)

Thanks everyone for your feedback!

I just had a MoBo do similar symptoms.  The bios chip failed.  MoBo was about 10 years old.  Computer would act like it booted, you could hear the dives power up, except no hdd lights, no video and system would take about 10 seconds of pressing power button to turn off.  Nothing visibly damaged, pwrsup voltages correct.

sometimes is a capacitor, sometimes is a burned chip, check each one and you might find it
