[Solved] No sound at startup
« on: January 06, 2013, 03:12:30 AM »
Hi
Running PCLinuxOS 2013 and all is working fine except for sound.  The soundcard is part of the motherboard and is identified correctly when I run alsaconf
When I log out and in again I loose sound and have to run alsaconf again.
The files /etc/modprobe.conf and /etc/modprobe.d/sound are present.

What else do I need to do to have sound working without having to run alsaconf every time I reboot?

Thanks
John

First of all give us some more information about your machine.
The output of lspci from terminal would be useful.
Are you using PulseAudio?
Can you make a screenshot of the alsaconf window right after boot? (when you have no sound)

Yep... more data is better than less.

Motherboard vendor, model, and in some cases, revision can all have an effect on the solution.
Which 2013 is it?  (KDE4, LXDE, XFCE, etc., or a combination environment?  Example: I run KDE4 but use LXDE as my primary environment.)
Do you have more than one sound card available in the system?
(That is, you're using the one on the motherboard, but is there another in the card cage somewhere?)

Definitely include the info agmg has asked for, too.  Let's work the problem.

Hi

Apologies for the delay in getting back, I have been away working.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA945gzm, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Geforce pcie gfx card and the sonundcard is onboard.  PCLinuxOS 2013 KDE.

Here is the output from lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ/P/PL Memory Controller Hub (rev 02)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family PCI Express Port 1 (rev 01)
00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 01)
00:1d.1 USB controller: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 01)
00:1d.2 USB controller: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 01)
00:1d.3 USB controller: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 01)
00:1d.7 USB controller: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 01)
00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev e1)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801GB/GR (ICH7 Family) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 01)
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation N10/ICH7 Family SATA Controller [IDE mode] (rev 01)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family SMBus Controller (rev 01)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G72 [GeForce 7300 LE] (rev a1)
02:05.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8110SC/8169SC Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)

I am not using Pulseaudio.

When I boot up I get a message that the soundcard is not working, resorting to default.

If I run alsaconf, I get sound, until I log out or reboot.

This is what I get after running alsaconf

Loading driver...
Shutting down sound driver: /usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1580: No soundcards found...
done
Starting sound driver: snd-hda-intel WARNING: Module snd_mixer_oss already in kernel.
done
Setting default volumes...

Thanks

You can also run alsamixer to check your volumes.

Try running alsactl -store after restoring your volumes with alsamixer or configuring with alsaconf.

This command will save your settings. Reboot and check.

Hi

Thanks, alsactl store seems to have done the trick.  I still get a message on start up that hda883 does not work failing back to default,  but sound works.

John.

For that message on startup, try changing the priority of your sound devices in Phonon.
