LAN messenger-can work on pclinux?
« on: January 05, 2013, 10:35:09 AM »
Hello! and happy new year
the other day I came across a "utility" called Lan messenger
the site can be found here
http://lanmsngr.sourceforge.net/index.php
it promises instant messaging between linux and win machines in the same lan
since this has been a long lasting problem (I have a pclinuxos machine in an active directory network in which I dont have administrative privileges and I want to comunicate with the rest win machines)
I tried to install the rpm version with the rpm command
it seems to install ok but then if I type lmc command it
responds
user_g@localhost ~]$ lmc
This is not a Canonical "designed" product.
/usr/lib/lmc/lan-messenger: /lib/i686/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.15' not found (required by /usr/lib/lmc/libQtGui.so.4)
/usr/lib/lmc/lan-messenger: /lib/i686/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.15' not found (required by /usr/lib/lmc/libQtNetwork.so.4)
/usr/lib/lmc/lan-messenger: /lib/i686/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.15' not found (required by /usr/lib/lmc/libQtCore.so.4)
[user_g@localhost ~]$

is there a way to make it work?
OR else is there a similar application that I could use?

Surely any IM client supporting Bonjour/Avahi would be able to do this?

....  but I guess there is something in the Win set up that prevents it?

Pidgin
Jitsi
etc etc

my goal is to communicate ("see" and exchange messages and files)
within the lan
with no external server been used (due to firewall and protection rules)
the extra is that i think Lanmessenger offers a "portable" version for windows
so
since I need to establish communication between 2 linux machines (whose I have complete control)
and some active windows in some of which I cant have any privileges at all...
pidgin/jitsi etc seems to communicate via social networks?
I must admit I am not an expert on communication stuff
sth as much as "plug and play" possible would be best for my needs!

They can use lots of protocols.

I use Pidgin within the LAN ....  as I said using the Bonjour protocol.
Pidgin is available for Linux and Windows ....  and probably others too but I have not checked.

It also has a 'presence' indicator.

from pidgin website
"...Pidgin is a chat program which lets you log in to accounts on multiple chat networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on MSN, talking to a friend on Google Talk, and sitting in a Yahoo chat room all at the same time..."

Do you have glibc installed?
This package provides libc.so.6

Yes in normal circumstances .......  I have no idea what 'active directory' might do to it  .......  or indeed even what active directory is ......

You can use Pidgin with the Bonjour protocol.
You will need Pidgin on both machines and Bonjour for Windows http://support.apple.com/kb/DL999
Then create accounts using the Bonjour option.

I installed Pidgin on Win 7 and did not require a visit to any Apple support site.
All it took was to install Pidgin and set up an account using Bonjour.

just to not let my answer "hanging"
(I had n't realized it earlier SORRY ::) )

Sorry I didn't do any of these (sounded tooo difficult to do for my case - I just liked LAN messenger and I didn't know what went wrong)

I 've been happily using LANmessenger with WINE ever since

pity though- I'd like to see it running without WINE

Its a heck of a lot easier to install Pidgin than it is to install and use Wine and another app  :D ......  unless there are more reasons to have Wine.

I don't have Wine on any of my PCs ......  I dislike the thing!

Glad you found something that suited you  ;)
