Using HP printer by usb and wirelessly SOLVED
« on: January 04, 2013, 11:25:52 AM »
I got an HP Officejet Pro 8600 from Santa.  I installed it with a usb cable and it works fine hard-wired, other than the popup to install missing printer driver that I've read here to ignore.

If I want to be able to print wirelessly from my iphone, ipad, laptop, or have someone remotely print from their computer, how do I set this up?  I've been searching, but I'm getting confused.  I've read about setting it up in windows (I do have XP in Virtualbox), but not with the installation cd, also about setting it up with my wireless/wired router, then there's samba...my head is spinning.

When I look at the details for the installed computer in PCC, it said the device URl is:

hp:/usb/Officejet_Pro_8600?serial=CN291BWGV605KC

Can anyone provide step by step directions, or provide a link to where one is?

Thanks for the help.

Hello kah5683 : I just recently installed a Brother HL2280DW Laser printer/scanner, and after I got and installed the Linux drivers from the Brother website, everything is working. In order for the scanner to work , it must be connected by usb cable to your main computer, but for the printer to work, I have it connected by a network cable to my router and my wireless laptops can print to it with no problems. You can connect it to the network and install it with CUPS, or get the address from cups and install it through PCC. If it can be seen by the network, it should work. Is there a driver for it in PCC>Printers? Hope this helps.  Also if you have the printer turned on before you start PCLinux, I don't think you will get that pop up. Also as a side note, I am running PCLinux KDE, fully updated as os a couple of days ago.

Thanks for responding ff103.

As I mentioned above, my printer does work with the usb cable, I just want to add the ability to use the wireless aspect of it.

As far as drivers are concerned, I chose the one of the ones in PCC for it, the HP Officejet Pro 8600, hpcups 3.12.9.  I tried finding a driver from hp, but they referred me to http://hplipopensource.com, where they want you to download hplip, which isn't necessary since I have it installed through synaptic.

I thought I'd try using Virtualbox with XP installed to try to use the installation cd that came with the printer.  When the installer started, it told me to use keypad from printer to connect to my router.  That was easy enough.  After it was set up, my iphone saw the printer and printed.  I set up a wireless printer in PCC and it worked with a test page.  I then wanted to test whether it would work from another computer wirelessly over the internet, so I went back to my XP in Virtualbox and added a network computer, choosing to connect by internet, and putting in the following:

http://AAA.AAA.A.AA:631/printers/B     Where the A's are the IP address of my COMPUTER, not the printer (my test page from printer showed a different IP address), and B is the name of your printer.

Printed a test page, and worked fine (made sure usb printer wasn't connected in virtualbox).

Lastly, ff103, I keep my printer on all the time, and after I reboot, the boxes about installing a printer driver still show up.  Is it the other way around, perhaps?

Thanks, again.

I only get the pop up "missing printer driver" if I start my computer and turn my printer on later. I don't get the pop up if the printer is on first. If you open dolphin and click on "network" on the left column , does your printer show up there? Are you connected to the router from the printer with a network cable? If not then Samba will probably be how you will have to do it.There were a couple of Samba "how to's" on the forum, a search of samba, should turn them up. I found this that might help,http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,107968.msg922612.html#msg922612, or maybe this, http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,107636.msg931835.html#msg931835, hope this helps.

About a year or more ago I set up a HP printer in PCLOS using USB.

To get it working over wireless I had to use the Win software to access the printer to set it up with my router.

Once that was done it worked over wireless with PCLOS.
