I just wanted to say, I am not trying to contradict what others have said in this thread, I was just throwing out what I did as yet another option, I know that you guys know a heck of a lot more about this than I do.

To quote an old southern-fried rock band, "It ain't like that."  Discussion of options is part of the process here, and how everyone learns.

(I know... I stick my foot in it often enough around here.  ;D )

The information you gained doing as you did may lead to other uses, too.  Might be beneficial for you to try to jot some of that stuff down for future reference.

It does sound like the Software, LXDE, is struggling with Memory, (Hardware) otherwise you would get an installation. Personally I'd take the advice of Old-Polack, kjpetrie, johnmart, and Neal who are experts.
