Man that guy gets a big full sound out of his drums.

Allot of drummers think that (when live) that sound comes from tuning low and fat but it doesn't, it comes from tuning properly and surprisingly "high".

Proper mic'ing and mixing then works the rest of the magic.

In a studio however, if the engineer does not know what he is doing, he will kick you out if you tune your drums like this. LOL

True, I've been amazed by such thinking too. I joined a local reggae group around 1993 and played for the first year my old acoustic setup: 18" bass drum, 14" snare, 13" tom and 16" floor tom, which sounded quite modern and fat while tuned jazzy. I used the same setup for loud rock, blues and what not, always tight and easy for recording and live as well. Later we started to use electric drums, because those are lighter to carry and don't take much space, but not so nice to play though. Nowadays I mostly use djembé and cajón as a setup with splash cymbal, shaker, brushes and tambourine, convenient to carry around for the middle-aged hippie. ;)

The problem comes from the fact that an acoustic drum sounds drastically different to the audience than it does to the drummer.

If a drummer tunes his drums so they sound good to him, chances are good the audience will not agree.

Understanding this fact will, or should, influence his tunning choices.

It takes some time and resources but it helps to tune your drums and then get a friend to hit them while you stand 50 feet away. You will immediately see that you have tuned WAY too low.  ;D  

Drums are designed to sound their best when they "vibrate". Drummers would be well served to tune in such a way that allows them to do that.  ;)

One of the all round Geniuses who comes around maybe once a generation; maker of one the first Digital Video clips with a dozen Atari's,  ??? :o ( he asked for some help, but hadn't been invented ... ) the extraordinary Musician, 'Gearhead', Todd Rundgren.  :D

Todd Rundgren Change Myself Lightwave Music Video

Created totally with NewTek's LightWave 3D modelling and rendering software and NewTek Video Toasters on Amiga computers, in the early 1990's.

This video was ripped to MPEG from a very high quality promotional VHS tape. This video was a monumental achievement in 3D animation for its time in the early 1990s and it was done COMPLETELY on affordable, personal computers.
Todd actually used a stack of ten Amigas (because it would have taken forever to render this many frames of 3D animation on a single machine).. and was sneakernetting SCSI hard drives between them since Commodore, Amiga's maker, would not provide him with networking hardware to make the rendering of the thousands of frames in this video easier. He did most of the 3D object modelling and animation scene plotting himself.

So he's not just a singer / songwriter, but a VERY talented artist and computer wizard too. He originally intended the video to be 100% 3D rendering but Warner Bros. insisted that he appear in it, so he filmed himself in front of a black backdrop and then overlayed the film of him singing the song onto various 3D objects in the final rendering, ... much more on YT Video page, ...

I was following this thread http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,112477.0.html so I started looking through my Music folder. I have an Original Master Recording Pink Floyd - Meddle CD that was released in 1989.
