What have you tried that did not work?

What is your audio set up ......  do you use ALSA or other; do you use PulseAudio or not?

The hardware configuration of your PC might also be helpful.

Is there a key combo to turn it on/off.

Is it definitely ON in BIOS, if such an option is present?

Forum members will need more info then you've provided.

What DE are you using, KDE etc

Are you using PulseAudio, if yes, do you have pavucontrol installed, and have you looked in

PCC (Configure Your Computer) > Hardware >> Sound Configuration

to see if it's enabled and which driver is being used

What you've actually tried so answers aren't repeating things you've already tried

PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.4; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.4.38bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver
