If you open Dolphin, and in View on the menu bar select to "Show hidden files", you should be able to scroll down and see if  ~/.asoundrc is present.

If not then create the file with the contents for PulseAudio as posted earlier.

Hope that makes sense ......

Code: [Select]
pcm.pulse {
    type pulse
}

ctl.pulse {
    type pulse
}

pcm.!default {
    type pulse
}

ctl.!default {
    type pulse
}

I will restart the machine and see if the sound is working.

Nope, still no sound. The file is there i.e in /home/rejean/

Install Qasmixer from the repository and go through the sliders for you audio card to see if any one is minimised or muted.

If you are seeing the volume changing on the playback slider of PA Vol Ctrl  for an application playing sound, then you *should* be hearing it.

Quasmixer was installed. I opened it;

and maximized everything I could. I can see the volume changing in PA Vol Ctrl while playing the radio or a video but still no sound.

It is something like this I expected to see.

What kernel is being used on your install?    uname -r    in a terminal to find out.

I wonder if it would be worthwhile installing an additional kernel to test whether that would give better results. I have no info on your sound card (ACL887) ....  maybe it needs a newer kernel .....  but don't know.

Before that though ......  do you remember if sound was working from the install media (liveCD) before you installed the OS ...  or if you still have it can you check?

Quote
$ lsmod | grep -i realtek
snd_hda_codec_realtek   153534  1
snd_hda_codec          75755  3 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel .........
  etc etc

Please try that command to confirm the realtek module is loaded.

here is what I get from the installed PCLinuxOS;

Code: [Select]
[rejean@localhost ~]$ uname -r
3.2.18-pclos2.bfs
[rejean@localhost ~]$ lsmod |grep -i realtek
snd_hda_codec_realtek   153534  1
snd_hda_codec          75755  2 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel
snd                    43879  15 snd_usb_audio,snd_usbmidi_lib,snd_rawmidi,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mixer_oss
[rejean@localhost ~]$

I'll now reboot into the live dvd.

And this is what I get from the live dvd;

Code: [Select]
[guest@localhost ~]$ uname -r
3.2.18-pclos2.bfs
[guest@localhost ~]$ lsmod |grep -i realtek
snd_hda_codec_realtek   153534  1
snd_hda_codec          75755  2 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel
snd                    43879  11 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mixer_oss
[guest@localhost ~]$

I had no sound from the live dvd and when I opened QasMixer I got;

Quote
Mixer device couldn't be opened
function; snd_mixer_load
address; default
error; Invalid argument

No. All I tried was the radio from the internet but I assumed that if it showed that it should play and there is no sound there was no need to try a music cd.

I forgot to mention that I usually use a cordless headphone set so last night I had a bright idea (well it felt like so then) and I tried a corded headphone set both at the back of the computer and there is a little door at the front which when open gave me access to 2 usb connectors and 2 sound plugs (pink and green)) and I tried plugging the headset into all the holes but no sound.

There was no sign of that headset showing up in the pic you posted of the config tab of PA ..........  what kind of cordless headset is it?

What I see on the little tower? it is a Sony TMR-RF960R

I just plug it where I would normally plug a corded headset (the green connector) and none of my other distros have a problem with it.

What I don't understand is that, like you said, QasMixer should have come with more sliders and right-clicking on the sound icon on the system tray and clicking on KMix normally gives me more options and quite often (in other distros) one of the sliders is down and I have to move it up before I get sound but not in this case.
