[solved ]no sound in FullMonty
« on: December 31, 2012, 06:12:49 PM »
Hi all!
I just installed FullMonty. It looks fantastic. The only thing so far is that I have no sound. I do have sound in all the other distros installed on this machine.
I did 'alsaconf' as root and it went fine;

Code: [Select]
Now ALSA is ready to use.
 For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer.

 Have a lot of fun!

but still no sound so I tried;

Code: [Select]
[root@localhost rejean]# alsactl store
alsactl: get_control:250: Cannot read control info '2,0,0,Front Playback Volume,0': Invalid argument
[root@localhost rejean]#

Now here is what I have in /etc/alsa/alsaconf ;

Code: [Select]
# ALSA library configuration file for alsactl tool
# (/usr/share/alsa tree is not necessary for alsactl)
#

ctl.hw {
@args [ CARD ]
@args.CARD {
type string
default "0"
}
type hw
card $CARD
}

My sound card is described as;
Code: [Select]
Here you can select an alternative driver (either OSS or ALSA) for your sound card (Intel Corporation|N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller).

Your card currently use the ALSA "snd_hda_intel" driver (default driver for your card is "snd_hda_intel")

Why is it working everywhere else but not here?

This is one of the first things I had looked into but the fact is that I have no options;

Built-Audio Analog Stereo is the only choice I get whatever the devices I look for.

I also did a 'alsaconf' but that didn't change anything.

I tried using AlsaMixerGUI but I get a
Code: [Select]
alsamixerGui: function snd_mixer_load failed:Invalid argument..
Anything else that anyone can suggest would be welcome because I am starting to like KDE4 but without sound it is not practical for me

Do you have a HDMI connector on that machine?

If so it is possible the sound stream is being directed there instead of to the sound card.

There is one on my video card but there is nothing connected to it. And why is PCLinuxOS the only distro with this problem. I hace OpenSuSE, CentOS,Mint, Mageia, Siduction and Manjaro installed but none has this problem.
Is there any setting I can change or software I can install.
I am amaze at how many programs come with PCLinuxOS as long as they work.

I am not very familiar with Full Monty, but I recommend installing and enabling PulseAudio and in addition   pavucontrol  - the PulseAudio Volume Control utility.

When PulseAudio is enabled and functioning correctly, launching PA Volume Control gives the user control through the GUI, of how the sound streams are handled .......  to which sound device they are sent, for instance.

If you are not using the HDMI connection, you can disable it there, and the sound should be sent to the sound card ...............  IF this is what is happening in your case.

These are instructions for installing PulseAudio

I don't think there is a HDMI connector after all. Here is a picture of my video card;

 and my motherboard is a GA-G41MT-S2PT;

I will follow your recommendations and let you know what happens.
Thanks!

I went to the site you suggested (http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,83740.0.html) and did everything but no results, pulse audio is enabled but still no sounds.
Then I tried the trouble shooters but;
no sound profile symlink in /etc/alternatives/
and no /etc/sysconfig.
Any more suggestion?

The link is soundprofile... one word, and /etc/sysconfig is an integrated and essential part of your system. If you don't have the latter, you don't have a working system. Look again, for both.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

and I assume you want a picture of the 'Output Device';
Thanks for your help btw and Happy New Year to you and your family.

Here it is;

Thank you; that confirms you have one sound sink device, so the thought that the sound might be being sent to another device can be dropped.

When you play audio in any application, it should appear on the Playback Tab of that window, where you can adjust its volume.

Do you see such applications on the Playback Tab?

Does the volume indicator line vary with the sound being produced by the app.?

BTW ......  you should delete the ~/.asoundrc  file .....  or if necessary replace it by one with the content for use by PulseAudio.
I suggest deleting it while doing tests first, and if you have no sound try adding it again but using the details for use with PulseAudio.

Here is what I usually use to test the audio. It is aour local CBC radio station (http://www.cbc.ca/liveradio/popup/index.html?networkKey=cbc_radio_one&programKey=cape_breton);

The playback line in PulseAudio Volume Control does move. In the meantime I am trying to find the  ~/.asoundrc  file.

Either I cannot find ~/.asoundrc because I don't know how to look for it or else it doesn't exist and I don't know how to install it;

[same result with ~/.asoundrc btw]. I'll keep on looking.
