SOLVED: With Comcast now PcLinuxOS cannot connect to net
« on: December 31, 2012, 03:19:06 PM »
Hi All,

Rather strange incident occured after switching from Verizon to Comcast.  The PclinuxOS computer  no longer is able connect to the internet.   Sorry for the Noob sounding statement but at least it is honest.  :)

I have 3 computers connected to the Comcast modem/router  ( combination unit ).  2 Windows computers and the PclinuxOS computer.  The connections are all by cat 6 cable, no wireless is involved.  Of course, the 2 windows boxes connect just fine ( which is annoying! ).

The specs for the PclinuxOS box are:  a P4, 3 GHZ chip, Abit ic7-g motherboard with a built in Intel 82547GI gigabit ethernet controller.    That controller is what the cat 6 cable is plugged into.  ( Yes, a fairly old but reliable PC. )

Neither Firefox or Konqueror is able to connect at all ( which is not surprising ).    What IS surprising is that the live cd environment of PCLinuxOS cannot connect either.  In all cases the Green checkbox is lit up indicating a good wired ethernet connection.

In the Network center:

DHCP Client = dhclient
Get YP Servers is checked
Metric =5
MTU is blank
DHCP Host name is blank
Network Hotplugging is checked
Enable IPV6 to IPV4 Tunnel is not checked

The PCLinuxOS Pc worked flawlessly with Verizon but with Comcast....no joy.  The switch was just this Saturday.   I had turned on the PCLinuxOS Pc on today for the first time after the switch.    Additionally the port lights on the PCLinuxOS Pc work fine, 1 green light with 1 yellow light.

The only thing that comes to mind is that support for the Intel controller I referred to above, is no longer in existence.

Any and all ideas are welcome......truly stumped and not was well versed in Linux as I want to be.

Thank you,

Linath

Well not a total solve but close enough.  I have an older linksys NIC  that I put into the PCLinuxOS box.   Reboot, set the bios to NOT use the built in NIC, reboot again and Voila,  internet connection.

Still VERY Curious what the deal is with the motherboard NIC, but I can live with the curiousity.   Maybe this post will help others.

Happy ending for the year!  :)

Have you tried deleting your wired connection in PCC, rebooting, then recreating the wired connection,
again in PCC ?

Never Mind !

What kernel are you using  In a console use the following command

uname -a

You should see a line something like this

Linux localhost.localdomain 3.2.18-pclos2.a64 #1 SMP Thu May 24 03:56:24 CEST 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

You may have a kernel different from the one shown above.
