FullMonty hard disk space not available error [SOLVED]
« on: January 02, 2013, 06:39:36 PM »
Hi guys,

I just finally convinced my Dad to switch to PC and it did me dirty.  He tried to install in on his secondary computer and gets a very odd error.  Basically this is how it went, he booted it up, started the installer, selected for it to take over the entire disc, (disc is 80Gb and had Mint 13 on it) when he hit next it says, error, not enough space available, space needed, 10Gb, available 10Gb.  So, this is an 80Gb disc, which PC was told to take over and it says not enough space.  What should I do?  I hope I can resolve this before he chucks PC lol.   Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

As described in the Installation-help on the FM-desktop or in the FM-informationnRemarks, Point 3, you should not use automatic partitioning but instead
Quote
"custom disk partitioning" and create a (/)-partition of at least 15 GB and a Swap partition of at least 1 GB or 2GB.
or even better a 20-30 GB (/)-partition. Then all should work as expected.
good luck!

I just talked to my Dad again, he tried every single install option, and even wiped the HDD with GParted and still got the same error, so now what?  Thanks.

he is not supposed to try every install option. Instead, and for any install option when the partitioning dialog comes up, he must use "custom disk partitioning" and create a (/)-partition of 20 GB and a Swap partition of 2GB.

This is also explained, even with images, when clicking the Installation-help available on Desktop 6 in the live-session. Just read and follow these steps, should be no problem.
good luck,

Does the / partition have to be 20Gb?  Also, I didn't make it clear, but he did try custom disk partitioning, he made a 78Gb / partition and a 2Gb swap, still no go.

For the root-partition (/) use the default ext4 file system and assign it to be at least 15 GB, better more. Then you need a Swap partition of 2 GB. In addition you may choose to have a /home partition (also ext4 file system), into which the user-accounts will be placed. However, this is not strictly needed because if you do not do it then the /home is already included under the / partition.

If the harddisk has 80 GB and all of it can be used for PCLinuxOS, then I would suggest to remove all partitions which are presently on that disk and then set up a 2 partitions:
a) one partition of 78 GB, formatted as ext4, and mounted under /
b) one partition of 2 GB, assigned to SWAP
then all should go fine.

And what does "still no go" mean? We can not help you without detailed information.

what I meant by no go was that it still came up with an error, I'll have to talk to him more to find out, be back later, thanks for bearing with me.

Well, first off, FullMonty wouldn't install period.  Dad tried custom partitioning, and that didn't work still came up with the same error (not enough space).  He went ahead and installed PC KDE and everything went perfectly smooth, so he is still using PCLinux, just not FullMonty.

This info that doesn't make any sense to me. The installation procedure in FullMonty and anything that is related to it is identical to the normal KDE, so I can only assume that the partitioning wasn't done properly in FM.

Anyway, you got it working, so have fun!
