grub graphics disappeared
« on: December 29, 2012, 12:40:31 PM »
Hi,
My grub graphics have disappeared. When I boot the machine I get a
VGA text screen with the names of the boot options.

This happened several months ago and I never bothered to do
anything about it, but now I am hoping maybe someone can help me
fix it.

I am fully updated in Synaptic, before you ask. :)

Thanks,
Shimon

If memory serves well...................
(re)install pclinuxos-gfxboot-theme

Check the   /boot/grub/menu.lst file (as root) and ensure the line calling the graphics is referencing the correct partition on the correct drive - usually the same as the installed OS  ;)

Just17 - thank you. I checked that, and the gfxmenu statement has the same (hd0,4) as the kernel statements.

DeBaas - I tried that. At my next reboot I will see if it helped. :-)

No. Before shutting down I reinstalled pclinuxos-gfxboot-theme as suggested by DeBaas,
but today when I rebooted I still got only a text menu.

Try redoing the boot set up

PCC - Boot - Set up boot system.

Try redoing the boot set up

PCC - Boot - Set up boot system.
and use "graphical" instead of "text" mode

Unfortunately, as I described in a different thread
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,111905.0.html,
I cannot set up the boot system at all. :(

In that other thread I was attempting to add a new entry to my grub menu
but could not get into the application.

Edit /boot/grub/menu.lst manually, as root, and add a stanza for the second installation. It will show up in the boot menu the next time you boot.

I thank you Old-Polack for a *circumvention* (not a solution, unfortunately)
to my *other* problem - being unable to make changes via "Set up boot system".

However, your response didn't say anything about the problem of this thread:
the fact that my grub does not display anything graphic, just text.

Can anyone help me with that one?

I think your problems from both threads are connected. First try a full upgrade as Just17 suggested in the other thread, then if that doesn't fix the problems, reinstall the drakconf package as I suggested there.
