no root password at Login Screen
« on: December 29, 2012, 08:20:17 AM »
Hi

Suddenly my root password doesn't work at the Login Screen ::)
I haven't make any changes at all, just when i login as user and start for example Firestarter (Firewall) which requires the root password, then this will work again, means i can give the root password.
I'm concern about a probability of a security breach? it's this possible?

thanks for the help

Do you mean "root" does not  appear in the list of users at the login screen, or does it appear as a user and the password doesn't work?

If the former, then for what it's worth, that's the way I prefer it. You should never have to log in as root unless in an emergency, when chances are you won't get to the GUI login anyway.

Go to "Configure your desktop", then to "Login Screen" under "System Administration", then go to the "Users" tab. You will see a list of "Excluded Users." Any user whose box is ticked, won't have his name appear at the login screen. I have my "root" ticked because I can't think of any reason to ever log in as root.

Is "root" ticked in your "Excluded Users" screen?

Btw, instead of clicking on a user to login to, you can simply type in "root", then <enter>, then the password and <enter> again. You won't see the user typed, but I know it works  ;)

I think that depends on which login screen you have selected. I'm using the "KDE" theme by Texstar, and I can only select -- by mouse click -- a user and type the password in the box. There is no place to type in a user name that does not appear on the user list. I just logged off to confirm this, unless I'm completely missing something.

I know, I was confused at first too  ;)

When you first get to the login screen (I'm also using the KDE screen with 2 users visible), just type the user name, enter, then the password and enter again.

It works. I know because I always hide the users "root" and "testuser" because I hate scrolling (I'm totally lazy  :D). I type in testuser and the password and voila, I'm in. I don't click on a user or in the text field, just type away.

thanks, all you said it's been working so , as i said in my post didn't make any changes.
i could always log as root for fixing something or as a user already logged in, switch to the root for fixing something.
this doesn't work anymore, because the password of the root wouldn't be accepted, that's the mess!!

Just to clarify, the root partition is "/" and actually has nothing to do with the root user. I know it's confusing, and they should've maybe named the user "admin" or something to distinguish the root user from the root partition, but that's how it is.  ;)

As i couldn't find any satisfactory solution to thr issue concerning the root password,  i just using my last mylivecd from last Sept 2012 reinstalled and updated KDE and it's working fine again.
By the way, the mask (Login Screen) that contained Root and User was in my case never modify; how it was changed to unknowm it's for me still
funny mistery!
Thank's all of you for your thought's
and Happy New 2013 ;D
