Paid TV channels
« on: December 29, 2012, 07:36:09 AM »
There is cable, over telephone-line, and dish TV.

I had at one time TV through my telephone line (Sasktel).  I presently have my TV through Bell dish-TV.

They both are out to get you..!  When I went back to Bell... I wanted a cheap package.  So I took a bit of a stripped package for 51.00 dollars a month.  But it left me wanting some of the channels I wasn't getting.

So I stepped up to a better package that cost me 71.00 dollars a month.  BUT, it doesn't have a channel that is in limited preview... the Oasis channel.  I love this channel..!

But, to get this channel... I have to buy another package... GRRRRRR..!

They have got you coming, and got you going....

It can be irritating.
I took it to extremes and dumped them all. Now I have over the air TV with my rabbit ears antenna.
I get from 15 to 24 channels depending on atmospheric conditions. It can be a pain at time when a channel is flickering from interference , but in the end it is free so I deal with it.

You're profile tells me little.  Joe, what country are you in?

In my country (Canada), at least in MY part of this country... just an antenna gives you three channels.  One of the three is French..

So you can see why it is required to find another TV source...  :)

That was not known to me that only 3 channels are available in Canada over the air. As you say in your part of Canada. I wonder if it is more elsewhere in your country?

When I am not traveling to Antares  ::),  I reside in the USA.

As far as I know many channels are available all over the USA.
Actually, if I had a better antenna, like one on the roof, I could get as many as 50 channels that are out there just floating around to be captured.

Normally I get the main US channels. CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX . I also get multiple PBS channels that give quite a varied amount of programming. I get the 3 ION channels which have movies and programming I like. I get ME TV which is the Retro Television Network with all the old shows from the past. I get 2 different ones of those. I get the "THIS" channel which is mostly movies. Create TV which is artist shows and cooking shows etc. PLUM  TV  is new. It is all about living the high life if you are a millionaire. I have no need to watch that. Not my lifestyle.  ::)
Also a few other channels that come and go.
So you see, this is not so bad for free. Most of my friends all have cable and spend as much as $150 USD for TV phone Internet.
I prefer to spend that money on wine, women and song.  ;) :D

I guess it does depend on what is being carried free to air on satellite in your region.

I stopped paying subscription satellite a year or more ago and now have free to air satellite in conjunction with Irish terrestrial channels (5 of them).
Last time I looked there were about 800 channels available .... about 90 of them carry programming I would watch sometime.

The subscription channels I *thought* I could not do without are but a distant memory .... I have plenty of choice - more than I had, in fact - and free of cost.

We recently stopped subscribing to SkyTV here in NZ. Now, we have about 15 or so channels available via UHF terrestrial transmission via Freeview. In some parts of the country, they need to get the same channels on Freeview satellite via a dish.

The price of TVs - flat screen, plasma, LCD, LED, HDTV has dropped considerably in the past two years here. At the same time IMHO, so has the quality of the stuff we get to watch. ::) ::)

Wow you are so lucky to get that many channels. Here we get only 4 or 5 and they suck really badly. I've got DirectTV and am getting fed up with paying and have almost nothing but paid advertisement on late at night.  Most days I am up till 4:30 or 5:00am

I was using 25 channels analogue on Ziggo, 16.95 EUR.
They offered more and HD for the same price, so I bought me some decoders.
An extra package 3.95 offered me SyFy and a few other non interesting channels.
Then there was a change in Ziggo's strategy, now for something completely different.
3 packages:
1/Standard: 17.95 with my first 25 channels included I never watch the other 35.
2/Plus: for an extra 8.95 extra 30 channels I never watch.
3/Extra: does 13.22 on the Standard abo and 60 extra on the never scale, oh wait 59, it has SyFy.
So now the pricing for SyFy is 13.22 instead of 3.95.
I'm back on standard now and proxying the SyFy shows on Hulu.........

You guys/gals are so lucky.

If I had 15 or so channels... I would not be paying.

I consider myself extremely lucky. I get all the channels I would normally watch if I had cable.
The major networks and PBS satisfy my viewing needs.
So yes I am lucky as can be to be able to still get them for free.

By the way, most of the over the air channels are HD quality.

Joe,
I live on the eastern side of Toronto about 25 miles out. At the local market there is a stall which sells antennae for O.T.A. television.  They receive a similar number of channels as you do, they receive Canadian and US channels.
