Cashew not present in upper-right-hand corner [SOLVED]
« on: December 29, 2012, 01:35:35 AM »
i'm just about to tear what little hair i have out.  i just upgraded to a Dual Core - finally, but the CPU didn't recognize my hd so i had to reinstall the OS.  PCL is such a fast installer that it was just the fastest way to go, especially with the new sdd we have.

We are running KDE and as far as i can tell, we have upgraded as far as we can through Synaptic.  We now have all our old programs back but we still have a black screen and when we go to set the type of Workspace all that is available is Desktop and Netbook.  We are trying to get our Folder Workspace back.  Furthermore there is no Cashew in the upper right hand corner of the screen and when we right click on the screen there is no way to configure the Desktop.  We have reinstalled kde4-config, but to no avail.

What am i missing?  Ug, going to bed.

Have a great evening - there's a full moon!  :)

Sorry I am slight off topic.
"no Cashew in the upper right hand corner"
You lucky thing, I have hated that thing and would be so pleased if I could lose it forever, ever time KDE is updated the dammed thing comes back.
Back to your problem I had similar occurrence once and solved it by copying from another working machine file ".kde4" in the home or root folder and replace the one already there rename the old one first, or as I later found out make another user and copy files from same.
Best if all this is done from a boot-able cd
I hope you solve it.

Fred, better yet, just rename .kde to .kde_bak, logout, login and let the system recreate a default .kde.  Then, with Krusader, open .kde/share/apps on one side and .kde_bak/share/apps on the other side and copy from .kde_bak/share/apps the folders (like Krusader, Wallet, etc.) that you need to the .kde/share/apps folder.

Have a super afternoon!  :)

For those reading this thread who don't want the Cashew on the desktop, I think there are a couple of widgets
you can use to remove it.     Right click on your task bar, the click on Panel Options → Add Widgets →
Get New Widgets → Download New Plasma Widgets, then search for cashew.    I think both Py-Cashew (just
by installing it) or Stealth Cashew (by installing and configuring) will remove the cashew from your Desktop.

Neither one of the mentioned widgets have worked on my laptop. What I did find that works reliable is the rpm in synaptic called "togglecashew". Once installed run the program from  menu -> more applications -> configuration -> togglecashew

No folks none of the widgets toggle or other wise( and what kind of a made up word is widget) works correctly as every time KDE is updated (far to often as it is full of bugs) the widget is over ridden.
For me K stands for Kinder as in Childish.
If only we could have the old KDE back with some up dating, but sadly not to be. :'( :'(
