<Solved> Apt-cache slowing start-up
« on: December 27, 2012, 10:01:00 AM »
So I have finally configured FullMonty to my preferences, and backed-up all necessary directories in case I screw up.

I have a problem on start up.  When FM loads to my 'user' account, there is a lot of hard drive activity, slowing down the process.  This started after the last KDE update.  When the menu app finally appears, apt-cache bogs down the CPU and I have to wait 3-4 minutes until it completes.

How can I turn off apt-cache so it doesn't automatically go through this process on start up?

To delete your Synaptic cache open up the Preferences window from the Settings menu. In the Preferences window click on the Files tab and then click the “Delete Cached Package Files” button and all of those packages will disappear, saving you a good amount of space.

From within this same tab you can configure Synaptic to handle package files in various ways. The default behavior is to only delete packages when they are no longer available.

There is also an apt service that runs at startup, if you have it set.

Start the PCC (Configure your Computer) -> System -> Manage system services by enabling or disabling them.

The fifth entry in the list is apt un-check the box (if checked).

Thanks for the tips!

andy, I already have apt disabled in system services.

John, cleaned up the cache, but it still is the same.  Apt-cache runs in the background at startup hogging the CPU.

An example, I hope;

Although this is only one process, it continues to read different "showpkg" processes for 3-4 minutes before it finally stops.  Any other places to look?

I don't have knowledge or experience with your specific issue, but I have fixed some synaptic/apt issues by deleting and rebuilding the database.

That sounds (and looks) like the package module part of webmin. If you are not actually using webmin you could disable it in Services, otherwise you will need to see if that specific module can be configured or disabled in webmin itself.

Thanks Terry, looks as though that was it.  I disabled webmin and so far so good.  Will mark the thread as solved.
