OK. I just tried two  distros featuring XFCE 4.10 and both of them have the Trash applet included in the "Add new items" window from the Panel settings. And some more apps.
So, it's not a XFCE issue the miss of this applet.

Maybe ghostbunny will take notice about this... :)

I have two System using XFCE 4.10 that have NOT a Panel trash-applet: they are PCLinuxOS (a GNU/Linux distro) and PC-BSD 9.1 (a BSD System).
So, maybe, it's true: there is some problems or a BUG or a conflict (in XFCE 4.10) about the Panel trash-applet.  :(
... But I have a System too, using XFCE 4.10, that HAVE a Panel trash-applet (and have no problems): it is Foresight Linux XFCE.  ???
I don't know why, in PCLinuxOS XFCE the Panel trash-applet disappear, but -actually-  that is the situation.  :-\

The systems I tried (in live media, of course) are X-----u and Manjaro.
For now we work what we have with. :)

Thank you very much, JohnW!
In all my XFCE Sistem, at version 4.8 time, the trash applet had no problem: it works everytime good, for me.
But I have read about the BUG (I had not see any BUG, in the Panel trask-applet on my XFCE 4.8, but... if others write about a BUG, I must accept the idea) and hope that BUG can be solved nearly, because the Panel trash-applet is a very important applet (for Users who don't like to have launcher-icons at all, on their desktop), in my opinion.  :)
