Panel configuration
« on: December 27, 2012, 09:55:06 AM »
Hi to all!

I have installed Xfce alongside KDE and Enlightenment. I like all these three DEs.
Now, it seems in this 4.10 version can't configure the panel(s) as I like.
My way is a clean desktop, without icons, so I like to have all launchers in the panel.
It includes the Trashcan too. :)
But.. opening "Add new items" I don't find the possibility a task manager nor the trashcan (in the version 4.8 it was such an option).
As a result, I installed Docky, but no way to open it.
Of course there are some options like Cairo-dock, AWN or WBar, but I opted for Docky.

Thanks for any help.

You could add a desktop configuration file to /usr/share/applications
an example:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Terminal=false
Name=Trash Can
Comment=trash
Exec=thunar trash:///
Icon=user-trash.png

then save-as trashcan.desktop
it will then be available to add to your launcher

You would use a plain text editor such as mousepad or leafpad.
also a regular user cannot save to /usr/share/applications only root user can.
if you're not comfortable doing that, thunar side-pane has the trash can now.
I too like a clean desktop, upgrades are always fun.

The fact is that I don't understand Why now isn't possible to add the trashcan to panel, it don't appear in the "Add items" list! Also Why can't be included there a Task manager where might be added the programs icons/launcher... :(
Anyway, I reintalled the system and, for a while, I'll keep only the KDE. I can't stay quiet more than a couple of months. :) Maybe, meanwhile, the issues will be fixed...

Thank you for your reponse.
Btw, where is the "Thanks" button?

OK, whne I installed XFCE alongside LXDE I noticed that though XFCE installs all the needed packages to run the DE, it does leave some out.  Do a search for XFCE inside synaptic, and install the remaining packages.

I did notice that in my initial XFCE install I could not configure the system tray notifications, as they were all greyed out.  Not sure why.

The case is I installed all I'd found in relation to XFCE. Yet, functions as I described are missing in this edition supposedly better and, normally, more featured! -, though the former 4.8 had them...
And why can I not access Docky once installed and appears listed in tMenu?... Hmmm...
Now I performed a complete reinstall - in KDE, that's my default DE - and am afraid to install the XFCE too. :'(

Pretty nice, JohnW!

But, as I said, don't like icons on the desktop; I want keep it clean.
So, I'd like to have all things in the panel: trashcan, browsers, messenger, text editor, Synaptic...

Maybe ghostbunny will read this and do something. :)
I'll wait the new release.

.

He's working his @ss off trying to keep a lot of packages up to date, and making the new iso.  Also, if that feature was taken out of XFCE 4.10, there is not much he can do.  They might have removed the trashbox feature.

But I know they did not remove the launcher app for panels.  Is is not there on your install?

It's not removed I guess:

Xfce4-task-manager in the panel:

Me too had lost the Panel trash-applet in all my PCLinuxOS XFCE installations due the upgrade fron XFCE 4.8 to XFCE 4.10... and me too don't like at all to have icons on my desktop (better to put all icon into Panel, in my opinion).
The Trash icon is into the Thunar window, so it is easy proceed to empty the Trash (like in LXDE [the trash-icon appear in PCManFM window]), but I think it was a great lost the Panel trash-applet disappeared upgrading from XFCE 4.8 to XFCE 4.10...   :(

The qustion is:
Is it a XFCE 4.10 issue or s a PCLinuxOS XFCE one?
Just for curiosity I'll look for this in other distros featuring XFCE 4.10.

BTW, just finished the XFCE install. New install, having nothing open and in user mode the CPU is at 80%!!!
So, I'm back in KDE.
