Toshiba laptop with damaged ethernet port so picked up USBKR 100 USB10/100 eth to USB adapter and set up as eth1. Seems to work fine except I notice if I use an external drive , eth1 connection is lost during or after a large download or file transfer.

Wireless and eth0 work. ( I can hold the ethernet cable in the right position for a minute to check). Also other PCs stay connected to router.

Also I have deleted eth0 and still have same problem on eth1

Is this a case of software DHCP or DNS being confused or maybe the USB bus is confused about what device takes priority so shuts off connection? This seems repeateable but can't always remember to shut off eth1 then connect external device, then disconnect external device, then reconnect eth1.

Thoughts?

Is the external HDD powered from the USB connector?

Is it possible a problem with supplying power to both devices?

Do you have a separate USB connector to try or maybe a powered USB hub to eliminate the possibility of a lack of sufficient power for both devices?

the usb should be on one side connected and the adapter on the other

on most laptops and netbooks each connector on each side belongs to a separate group and the hard disk should be on the side with more ports

if all the ports are on the same side, the first two usually are one group and the third one is another

what kernel are you using?  uname -r in konsole

Yes external is USB powered.

2 ports on each side. one pair are both usb,  the other pair is one usb and one is a goofy usb/ firewire or some thing. I know the funky pair sometimes won't spin up certain external USB drives.

kernel is 2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs. This is on a Tosh A305 (pclos 2010.x)  that I can't upgrade due to xorg-server causing problems with Intel graphics. Otherwise this laptop runs fine. Also am stuck at FF 3.6.x . That may have something to do with it as well.

Will try some various combinations and get back and mark solved. I think these suggestions are as good an explanation as any.

Thanks

"kernel is 2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs"

if you have that old kernel, you probably are using a very old install

have you tried with a new iso?  that laptop is not that old, there should be a code that can help it boot with new kernels

Yes it is . I have two huge threads about xorg-server in pclos2011.x and later causing problems with a couple specific Intel graphics chipsets. They are also confirmed on a couple you tube developer (not user) videos, mailing lists and also over in the ArchLinux forums. Believe me I have tried tons of workarounds since summer of 2010. I have the frozen repos saved and  am fine with the way this lappy runs now. Will post back.

Thanks

[UPDATE] Apparently the issue is with using USB wireless devices ( mainly external HDD) while using the eth>USB adapter. The buss may not have the ooomph necessary. Will post back if problem reappears.
