From the right click menu, choose Move to Trash instead of Delete, or press the Delete key after selecting the file in question. To truly delete with the Delete key you also need to press the Shift key.

Additionally:

Some lost files can be recovered with a program like photorec.

I'm not at the moment running Full Monty but to make sure that nothing is deleted accidentally in other KDE setups you could first check that "Show 'Delete' command" is not ticked in Dolphin's settings ("Settings"->"Configure Dolphin..."->"General"->"Context Menu"). That will completely remove "Delete" from the right-click menu.

Then check "Settings"->"Configure Dolphin..."->"General"->"Behaviour"->"Ask For Confirmation When"->"Deleting files or folders". It should be ticked, while "Moving files or folders to wastebin" should not. If they are both checked you are more likely to ignore the warning dialogue, and it's only "Delete" that is dangerous.

You can still delete a file or a folder by holding down Shift while hitting Delete on the keyboard. You'll get a warning, but to be on the safe side might even want to remove that shortcut in System settings ("Configure Your Desktop").

It doesn't work that way... that's two separate commands. Delete does what it says, and likewise for Move to Trash. Use the correct command, or the correct key/key combination,  and your problem is solved.

Ignore this part.. see the "edit"

In Dolphin if you click "Settings/ Configure Shortcuts" and scroll down to "Delete". You can configure that key to do whatever you wish it to do.

It appears that your "default" setting is "Shift+Del".

As O-P has stated, this command will send your file directly to a "deleted" status.

If you "Customize" that to simply "Del" as O-P has stated, it will default to sending the file to the trash instead. (I assume this is what you would prefer it to do)

Hope that helps. I have switched mine back and forth to confirm that it works, so if you have more questions or problems getting it to work say the word and I can walk you through it step by step.

Good luck. ;)

EDIT:  Upon further research, it appears that the only "assigned" key combo that works with Dolphin is the "Shift+Del" command.

The assignment of simply the "Del" command does not appear to do anything.

????

I am stumped.

You can remove the 'Delete' option from the right click menu in Dolphin .....

Dolphin - Settings - Configure Dolphin - Services (on left) - scroll down the list and untick 'Delete'

no "Context Menu" showing in Dolphin 2.1 on KDE 4.9.2 here (not Full Monty)

You are right; the "Context Menu" setting seems to have been removed in KDE 4.9.2. For the parts of it that are relevant here we have "Settings"->"Configure Dolphin..."->"General"->"Confirmations" instead. (I was running my 64 bit system, where the term is still "Context Menu".)
