Excluding users (root) from login screen (SOLVED)
« on: December 23, 2012, 09:09:02 PM »
I just did a fresh install of PCLOS using the recent KDE 2012.12.iso. This particular PC has been running a little quirky ever since the KDE upgrade a while back. The new installation is now running great -- it's got that new car smell and feel.

Anyway, I've always excluded "root" from the login screen, so I went to my desktop settings to do that again and realized, I have no idea what to do with all those other "Users."

What are all those user entries like "@audio", "@cdwriter" and, for that matter, "@root" and "@users"?

Should I exclude these "users" also? Or doesn't it matter?

Many thanks.

It should be safe to exclude them.

They look like groups more than users to me.Different groups allow users to acquired different privileges that are gained by being members of groups that posses them.

.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..

IIRC, tick the entries for the users you wish to exclude --- those without the '@' in front, such as  root  but not  @root

That omits the user from the list, but the account can still be logged into if the name and password is known.

Thanks for the replies, guys. It's good to know I can exclude "root" from the login screen but still be able to log in as root in an emergency by leaving "@root" unticked.
