Memory Discrepancy (Solved)
« on: December 23, 2012, 03:01:19 PM »
So my laptop seems to be using more memory than I think it should... and conky doesn't show as much memory as I have....  I'm wondering why that is, and if there's something else wrong, or if I should be using a different kernel....

This is a Lenovo G550... Dual-Core Pentium T4400 CPU.... 2 - 2GiB memory chips.... Intel controllers...  Broadcom BCM4312 wireless

Maybe someone can point me in the right direction? I'm sure I haven't given enough information....

kernel-3.2.18-pclos2.pae.bfs
Is the kernel to use, giving you the complete 4G mem.

if it has integrated graphics then the graphics system will also be using some of that RAM

Yes indeed the integrated graphic set have no own memory available and uses RAM for it.

if you are not using a 64 bit kernel or a pae kernel, the system won't see the ram after 3 or 3.2 gbs

if the video card is using ram, you could see maybe 2.8 gbs of ram

you can add another kernel and see how much ram is reported

remember to add a new kernel but don't remove the old one, just in case the new one gives you problems

2.6.38.8pclos3 pae or 3.2.18 pae are two good options, for laptops some of us couldn't use kernel 3.2, so i would recommend you to try first the old one

Thanks, guys!

I'm trying out the 3.2.18pclos2.pae.bfs kernel, and it seems to be working well.... my conky display now says I have 3.89 GiB of RAM.... that's much closer, and I'm sure there are other systems (like graphics) using the RAM as well, like everyone mentioned.

I'll try everything, but it all seems to work so far....   thanks so much!!!!

if it is a intel video card, it can use up to 512 mbs of ram, it seems to be using around 200 at the moment, so it is ok

if you don't hve problems hibernating or with powersave, keep that kernel, if problems happen, 2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs should be a better choice

I don't seem to have any problems so far....  I don't really hibernate the laptop (unless it automatically hibernates when I close the lid)... and I imagine my video display is using some of it, so I'm not going to worry, unless I start having problems...

Thanks!!!!
