[Solved] No Xorg after Synaptic update - Updated
« on: December 23, 2012, 02:21:26 AM »
I have installed PCLinuxOS 2012 KDE and after running Synaptic to update I get a very basic log in box.  Once logged in I try startx and I get an error message to say X is already running.
How do I fix this?

Thanks.

What video card is your system using?

From the GRUB screen, try using the VESA graphics option the next time you boot up - you might get to a usable desktop that way.

The gfx card is a Nvidea Geforce 6100 and it worked fine previously.  I have changed the motherboard because the onboard sound had failed.

I only get PCLinuxOS KDE or Safe Mode ooption on Grub screen.

Initially the system works, it is only after I run Synaptic that I have a problem.

I have just completed a fresh install, run Synaptic, but I am not going to log out until I find a solution!

Thanks

Which messages you get?

Other question which Iso you using?
There is an Iso calling 2012.12 for kde...

I believe I am using a recent version.  I am currently downloading the latest iso

I have also noticed that after applying Synaptic I loose my menu.  There is only the titles, no actual listings of applications.  There is no option to restart, only log out or hibernate.

I have completed a clean re install and am going to try Synaptic but unmark anything related to graphics to see if that works.

Have read through changes that Synaptic is going to make and KDM and KIM are going to be removed - cannot unmark them - will allow to remove then will re install them and let you know the result.

As daniel  mentioned, check that the iso download is for 2012.12

I personally would be reluctant to remove the KDM login manager

Solved I think.  Well I am now using an installation of PCLinuxOS.  I completley formatted the drive, recreated the partitions and re installed PCLinuxOS.  I ignored the message in Synaptic about not finding all the necessary files, applied updates, rebooted and it worked.

Update - I was misguided - X was working fine.  The issue is with KDE updates.  When Synaptic updates it removes a lot ok KDE files, these need to be replaced and hey presto it works.

Here is a link to the solution I found http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,108162.0.html

I had similar issues on a couple of my PCs. I followed Old-Polack's excellent instructions and got things working again. But not perfectly. On both machines, I kept having some quirky issues. Dependencies missing for certain programs (although different missing depedencies on the different computers?), some programs missing. Anyway, my systems were not broken by any means. But they just didn't "feel" right.

So I downloaded the 2012.12 ISO and did a complete reinstallation on those two PCs. Although I didn't go as far as you; I kept the current partition configuration and reformatted only the "/" partition. Then I simply recreated my user and assigned my old home directories, which survived the reinstallation completely intact.

I am *VERY* happy I did this! The 2012.12 PCLOS KDE release runs just awesome, and I haven't had a single issue since.
