Shorewall problem, will not start.
« on: December 22, 2012, 07:38:53 AM »
After upgrade to kernel 3.4.11-pclos1.bfs from the synaptic, shorewall will not start. When i type in the root shell command shorewall start, shows me the following error ERROR: A log level other than NONE requires LOG Target in your kernel and iptables.
Is it possible to solve this? Thanks in advance.

Is it possible that there is no solution? Cause this is an old version of shorewall, is it possible to insert the new version of the repo, that would be compatibile with kernel 3.4.11? Thanks at advance.

See only 2.6.38 and 3.2.18 kernels in stable sections in repository.
The  3.4.11 kernel is in testing section.
Not sure if this kernel gonna be be used.
Guess that package gonna be updated when the 3.4.11 gonna be in stable section(s).
Using packages from testing section is at your risk and there is no support it.
Also thx for the report.

I know that kernels you specified are stable and kernel 3.2.18 i used until the moment of purchesing of new hardware (MB Gigabyte GA-780T-D3L). Sadly on kernel 3.2.18 my sound card (Realtek ALC887 codec) wasn't recognized, but the sound of my GPU geforce GT610 was recognized and neither one of the solutions didn't help, so I had to cross to kernel 3.4.11 where everything is recognized immediately.
After some time I accidently discovered that shorewall does not start with system and on the internet I found similar problems:

http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.security.shorewall/27896

http://nlug.ml1.co.uk/2012/08/kernel-3-3-8-gentoo-to-kernel-3-4-9-gentoo/3498

Now what waive , security  with the new kernel, or retourn to the old kernel and waive the sound???
I use PCLOS since 2007 version and I loved it, I would be sory if I had to cross to another distro because of this problem. I tried live Mageia and everything works without problems, just like on live Suse, but PCLOS is still No1 for me. I hope you will find a solution for this problem.
Best regards from Serbia!

It seem to want either a log level of "NONE" or support for other log levels in the kernel or iptables.

The easiest solution seem to be to use log level of "NONE",it should be somewhere in the program configuration page.

Do you need the logs the program produces in other log levels?
.. 3 things are certain in life : death, taxes and software bloat ..
.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..

I don't need logs, but I can't locate where is that option in shorewall.

It's the kernel config that has to be changed. I've reported your problem in the testing section as gseaman, who built the kernel, may not have seen this thread.

They need it!

Thanks for pointing me to this thread, Bald Brick. I'll update the testing kernel with this and another couple of changes and let you know when it's available for testing.

When can it be expected that the kernel 3.4.11 with corrections will be available for download?
Thanks in advance.
