I removed as suggested "alsa-plugins-pulse-config" I also then got the outputs for aplay -l and aplay -L as below

 aplay -L
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
pulse
    PulseAudio Sound Server
default
Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)

Glad it's working. But I see traces of PulseAudio in your output.
Did you ever install PulseAudio on your machine and then uninstall it?
Did you use task-pulseaudio-remove to do that?

Can you do one more check?
Go to Configure Your Computer -> Hardware -> Sound Configuration and see if Pulseaudio is checked?

When checking hardware/sound both enable pulseaudio and enable 5.1 pulseaudio are enabled

The laptop has been running pclos for round 10 months and was working successfully until several moths ago, I turn on update notifier, then did several updates, I did not use VLC for some time and then wanted to use it and found this issue.

The version of VLC now is  2.0.3 Twoflowerm and when I started it was probably .13.1.1

Do you need PulseAudio?

If yes, I suggest you reinstall task-pulseaudio.
Then go back to sound configuration and make sure PulseAudio is checked. Reboot and check again.

If no, I suggest you use task-pulseaudio-remove to remove everything related to PulseAudio from your system.
