« on: December 22, 2012, 12:19:16 AM »
8)For some time now, whenever I use VLC player I have no sound, however when I login I hear the start up sound

I have a ASUS G73SW laptop, with an intel sound card.

I have been looking at various forms with no success, now when I login in I see this error
The audio playback device HDA Intel PCH (ALC269VB Analog)  does not work

I have run alsaconf as admin, but to no affect

Help Would be appreciated

The problem is specific to VLC? Is sound OK in other programs?
The problem is with video or audio or both?
What version of PCLinuxOS are you using?

If you are using KDE, you could try going to:
Configure Your Desktop --> Multimedia --> Phonon
and check what devices you have there. You could also try setting everything to the defaults.
For the whole world, you are someone.

Just in case you haven´t found a remedy  ::)

This has/d been bothering me for a couple months - snd was working fine under vlc 1.1.13 ??  but after upgrade to 2 x would fail ??
I messed around with it for ages, uninstalling and re-installing, in the end I uninstalled vlc 2x and re-installed 1.1.13 along with all the plug-ins (no longer included under 2x ??) and presto every thing worked just fine once again.
On one of my boxes I completely reinstalled the whole OS (32bitKDE 12.8) to no avail.
Saw no one else complaining so carried on - unfortunately after each update (weekly) I would uninstall vlc 2x and re-install 1.1.13 - LOL.

System sound would work fine, as would all other apps (kaffiene, Clementine, xine) but not vlc.
Finally uninstalled everything pulse and viola - vlc 2x with sound.

Maybe not in your case but has been in mine.  ;)

Thanks for the help

the distro is
cat /etc/*-release
LSB_VERSION=lsb-3.1-ia32:lsb-3.1-noarch
DISTRIB_ID=PCLinuxOS
DISTRIB_RELEASE=
DISTRIB_CODENAME=
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="PCLinuxOS"
PCLinuxOS release 2012 (PCLinuxOS) for i586
PCLinuxOS release 2012 (PCLinuxOS) for i586
PCLinuxOS release 2012 (PCLinuxOS) for i586
PCLinuxOS release 2012 (PCLinuxOS) for i586
PCLinuxOS release 2012 (PCLinuxOS) for i586

I keep the distro upto date with update notifier turn on

I have uninstalled most of the pulse

I have already done this

"Configure Your Desktop --> Multimedia --> Phonon
and check what devices you have there. You could also try setting everything to the defaults."

But still no luck,
In VLC player I now see this error

Audio output failed:
The audio device "default" could not be used:
Connection refused.

VLC player in my opinion is one of the best multimedia player round

Thanks in advance

Paul

...... and the answers to the above three questions ?

BTW ....  confirm that the audio card is not turned off in BIOS.

Thanks for the help so far.

The problem is with VLC Player, and with videos, I have not tested with audio

Card is seen in Bios, I hear sound in firefox.

I get this message at logon

The audio playback device HDA Intel PCH (ALC269VB Analog) does not work. Falling back to default.

Let me know what other messages I need to help fix this issue.

Hi again - check if Pulse is installed ?

If so open Synaptic - Search for Task and select task-pulseaudio-remove then Apply
After finished close Synaptic and Log-Out (Better still - Reboot)

After Reboot see if VLC will play your Videos with sound.

Also, have you tried to play the Videos with sound using either Kaffeine or Xine?

There is no task-pulseaudio

Did not have Kaffeine, then installed,  and yes do have sound.

Pulse installed are

alsa-plugins-pluse-config
libalsa-plugins-pulseaudio
libgsm1
libpulseaudio0
libpulseglib20
soundwrapper

When checking dependencies, found that alsa-plugins-pluse-config had a conflict with libalsa-plugins-pulseaudio, so removed libalsa-plugins-pulseaudio

With out reboot no change, rebooting

Thanks Hawkeye

Is audio enabled in VLC?

Also ..

In VLC settings change the audio output device from 'default' to something else available - maybe Alsa and test the choices.

Close VLC
Rename ~/.config/vlc/vlcrc  to  ~/.config/vlc/vlcrc.bak
Launch VLC and test it with an audio file.

In a new KDE 2012.12 installation without Pulseaudio, the packages "alsa-plugins-pulse-config" and "libalsa-plugins-pulseaudio" are not installed.
You mention that you removed "libalsa-plugins-pulseaudio". Try removing "alsa-plugins-pulse-config" also.
Did you ever have PulseAudio in your machine?

Please post the output of aplay -l and aplay -L from terminal.
Also go to Configure Your Desktop -> Multimedia and check what Backend you are using.
A screenshot of the audio devices would be useful too...

I removed as suggested "alsa-plugins-pulse-config" I also then got the outputs for aplay -l and aplay -L as below

 aplay -L
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
pulse

default
Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)

    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output
hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, HDMI 0
    HDMI Audio Output
hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=1
    HDA NVidia, HDMI 0
    HDMI Audio Output
hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=2
    HDA NVidia, HDMI 0
    HDMI Audio Output
hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=3
    HDA NVidia, HDMI 0
    HDMI Audio Output

and

aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC269VB Analog [ALC269VB Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
