Another curve
« on: December 21, 2012, 11:51:12 AM »
Hi

I must be the dumbest person here.
I just read here in the forum that I need to set up both a 32bit and a 64bit environment so I can package for both. Fine.
Since when does PCLOS have a 64bit OS? I cannot find one to set up. Are people using another distro for 64bit packaging in PCLOS?
The more I get into this packaging thing, the confuseder I get.

64bit versions of the KDE and LXDE desktop have been in existence for over 18 months now.  They are in "testing" status and have not been publicly released since they are lacking a number of key packages.  There is no support for them and all discussion is confined to the Testing section of the forum (and here in the packagers section of course  ;D).

See http://pclosusers.com/isos/ (or your preferred mirror) for the ISOs

Terry,

I should use the 64bit testing distro for packaging?

Just checking to be sure. I wouldn't want to submit packages only to be told by Neal I used the wrong environment.

Thanks

Ideally, packages should be built and tested on both 32 bit and 64 bit. The SRPM itself is "architecture neutral" so it doesn't matter which environment it is built on.  Hopefully, the same SRPM will build and work in both environments but sometimes some adjustment is necessary to achieve that. Personally, I do the initial packaging on my normal 32 bit system, then once it is tested and working I transfer the SRPM to my 64 bit system and check that it builds and works there too. You can, of course, use VirtualBox rather than having separate machines but it can be a little slow for large packages. If you really can only have 1 environment it is best to make it 32 bit (and then ask others to test your package on 64 bit).

Thanks Terry

I'm setting up my packaging PC for both 32 and 64bit processing.
