Android emulator--need help
« on: December 20, 2012, 11:00:49 PM »
I believe that I have the Android Emulator installed using VirtualBox. (I believe I have IceCreamSandwich.) A window
comes up with a picture of a lock on it, and by clicking on the lock, I can make it open. However, there is nothing in the window. With some futzing, I can get a screen within the window, sort of a menu, but I see no way to get a list of apps,
or how to download any.
I'm particularly interested in Shazam and SoundHound as  music recognition programs which seem to run
only on tablet devices, including Android.
I have looked in Google for a general users mailing list, but I don't see one. there seem to be a couple of lists
for developers, but I'm not one. If anyone here can point me at some general help for rank newbies to Android,
I'd appreciate it.

Alternatively, I would be interested in a music recognition program that runs on Linux or Windows--not Mac.
It should recognize a tune played on any instrument, not just a recorded arrangement.

Thanx for any help--and Merry Christmas!--doug

I used adnroid in virtualbox maybe 1 month ago with "shop play" from google.

http://androvm.org/blog/download/

For me this is too slow for my computer ( 2,5GHz 1 core), better working older android(2.3.6) in my 800Mhz  1 core proc in phone
( I can't test. new android in phone because I have too small memory in side in phone -  )
I've heard of better work in an older version virtualbox, I tested older from pc-linux only, but not working,
maybe is other, but I not tested, because I don't know how install.
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds
In script for download virtualbox (from pclinux) , maybe you have better link , I don't remember.
Good luck !

If all else fails you could get an android device. Just joking. :-)
Ooops, this isn't' sandbox.
Acer Aspire, Intel core2 2.20GHz, ‎Graphics nVidia ‎G98M [GeForce G 105M], 2gb ram, Wireless Intel Link 5100

Why, any 5 year old child could understand this.
Somebody bring me a 5 year old.

I will actually consider that if I find that the program--it looks like SoundHound is the one that will do
what I want if any of them will--actually fulfills its promise. If not an actual Android, I'd have to put the emulator on my laptop. Right now I'm just experimenting with the regular desktop machine. I'm one of those people who have some
kind of song running thru my head most of the time. (I used to be a weekend musician, until MADD-inspired DWI laws
put most of the roadhouse gigs out of business.)  Being that this is so close to Christmas, I have asked my kids who may
have an Android machine, to bring it, with the software, so I can test it out.  Before I go crazy trying to make it work here!

I appreciate the inputs from the various contributors here. I checked out the suggested forums, and it doesn't really
look like any of them are aimed at users in the way that the many Linux mailing lists are. Where our folks are mostly
experimenters to one degree or another, it looks like the tablet/iPhone/Android crowd are simply plug-and-play types.
(I suppose I should not be surprised, since Apple invented the paradigm.)
