Is Windows 8 really that simple? Find out the answer in a surprisingly simple stunt that took place in December 7th, in a Fnac store in Lisbon. The moment speaks for itself.

Windows 8 surprises with a "small" demonstration

"Windows 8 is so simple that even a child explains it." This was the starting point for the initiative that Microsoft has undertaken in Portugal last December 7 at Fnac Chiado.
On that day, who visited PC Experience was surprised with a product demonstration performed by a child, a full demonstration of the simplicity of the new Windows 8. The action picked up dozens of unsuspecting potential customers, whose reactions were all filmed and available on YouTube, a movie called "A Little Demo".

The idea was conceived and produced by agency The Office for Microsoft Portugal.

And the message is:

                                   Are you so stupid?

Short answer:
No, I'm not. I didn't take the training the kid had.

I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

That is not a shop in which I would spend my money ....... if a sales assistant walks off and produces a kid to explain something to me, I get the message .....  and they will get mine .....  no money from me!

...  also makes me wonder how they worked out with with labour laws, employing kids ......

It's all very lovely to have Windows 8 (Not). And what a lovely advertising clip. I've seen my 4 year old nephew manipulate his Apple -Tablet with amazing dexterity while involved, too.

And all the Hippies will have touch screens now, ...

What this video shows me is that the "rest of us" don't get it. Put every one of those adults up to a computer running PCLinuxOS with KDE and they'll find their way around in no time. They might not recognize some of the names in the apps, but as soon as they launch them, they'll figure out what they're for. But they're all confused by Windows 8. There's proof in the pudding that Microsoft doesn't have a freakin' clue these days. That UI is just horrendous!!!

Is this something that should be consider as an advantage of an operating system?
That a small boy can manage and explain it?

Well my 6 year old son can operate his PCLinuxOS computer. At the moment, he is doing it by remembering the icons he needs to press and the series of clicks needed to do something. Now that he's learning to read, he will understand and learn all the terms and names in no time and he will be fully aware of what he's doing. In 5 years from now (at 11 years) he will probably know more than me :) What if I gave him a Windows 8 computer at that time?

It will be like he had learned to drive a bus and went back to his toy car...

Why the sourpuss reactions? I think it's a brilliant advertising stunt which accomplishes exactly what it aims for: catching would-be buyers off guard in a humoristic way. It's a hyperbole and I happen to think it works well, brought a smile to my face even though I do not belong to the target audience.

Why is it so hard to admit that this IS a cool advertising stunt, well thought-out and executed to perfection. The kids were trained and prepared, the customer's surprise caught on video. What's there not to like?

PS: It wouldn't make me buy anything with windows in it but then I'm a hardcore PCLOS longtimer so I'm really corrupted. I know what the word "simple" actually means :D

As advertising goes, it is a good campaign, except, I'm getting mixed messages (disclaimer: I'm critical of almost all advertising, and tend to focus on their faults):
1) Is the point to tell us the kid is smarter than us (adults)?
2) Is the point that kids are not smart, but this OS is so easy, they can "get it"?
3) Is the point to highlight the fact that this is such a divergent approach, that a person without preconceptions is required to grasp it?
4) ...
I'm sure there are others, if I gave it any serious thought...these just came of the top of my head

(PS, it is hyperbole, as well)
 ;)

+1 to newmikey. The advertising agency gets top points.

(It hasn't convinced any of the posters in this thread, but that's just because we are too smart....)

My reaction was based, not on what they were trying to sell, but the actions of the initial sales assistant ......  who left the customers and sent in a child to do his job.

I would not buy anything in any shop who tried this.

Gimmicky it is.

It is also insulting to the customer.

It is also insulting to the customer.

It's kind of how I saw it. "MAYBE" it would have worked better if the kid was there the whole time, never an adult. "MAYBE". "MMAAAYYYYYYBEEE"...

Me personally, maybe have the customers use it themselves, and when an 'ADULT' asks if he/she can be of any assistance, they'd all say, "thanks, but I got it."

Hehehe, those "insulted" customers looked quite amused though...  :D
