Paralel XFCE install don't works
« on: December 18, 2012, 01:04:01 PM »
Hi!

I installed XFCE alongside KDE and E17. But in the login menu it's not listed.
Installed everything I thought is needed, avoiding what thought is unnecessary for a basic environment. Can't install couple of things - xfce4-config, libxfce4menu. It opens a window pointing out "Could not install... etc.". I tried also with console: Nothing...

3-4 months ago it worked well. About 5-6 weeks ago I could install it, but opening this session it was completely unfunctional.

Is there something wrong with XFCE? Or, maybe, I failed something.  :(

hi,

at first: we have a xfce section for this.

second: did you read this http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,110824.msg945826.html#new

third: to install xfce in a existing system use task-xfce and task-xfce-plugins

fourth: libxfce4menu is deprecated and replaced by garcon/libgarcon also xfce4-config is deprecated.
The full life is a big mess

PS:
I'm German. Sorry because of possible mistakes in my written messages xD

Plus, you have to use GDM as your display manager or reinstall KDM/xfce4-session packages to be able to login to Xfce

:) Let’s take it by points too:

at first: you are right. Sorry...

second: libxfce4utils wasn’t marked as having a update, so, what I did was reinstall it

third: task-xfce and task-xfce-plugins were installed; I reinstalled them too

fourth: garcon/libgarcon were also installed

fifth: ”PS:

Ich bin auch ein Deutscher (66,6% :D , doch nicht geboren in Deutschland) aber, schade, Ich spreche es nicht... :(
Vielen Dank für deine Hilfe. :)

agmg

Also, I reinstalled KDM. Thanks for your help, too.

Now it works, though not very well.... Is it a new version? It looks a little bit different.
Again, thanks for your help, ghostbunny and agmg. :)

Yes, it's updated from Xfce 4.8.3 to 4.10.0
The default desktop configuration is also changed a bit.

If you not like it it can be easy configured by your self ( http://xfce-look.org/ )

Well, the default desktop configuration is null. It have nothing, except the icons and the complete unconfigured panel. Ok, this is pretty good becuse I have the possibility to personalize all to my taste. Therefor I also prefer the Minime install.
But, I have some problems:
- windows goes below the panel and I don’t find the possibility to fix this issue like in KDE. No such setting is available.
- can’t add the trashcan to panel; neither Synaptic or browsers...
- I installed Docky... but no way to see it. Opening the menu, selecting and clocking over it, nothing happens; no way to make it appear. :)

Well, I have another issue, combined with the third beloved DE - E17 - but this in an other thread...

Yeah, very nice, JohnW. It’ just I don’t understand dutch... :)
But with a little bit german I’ll come to an end. :)

I put the panel up, and at bottom I thought in Docky but can’t see it. It is installed, nevertheless no way to make it appear.
OTOH, like I said, opening a windows (for example Synaptic or a browser) it goes below the panel, so the panel is covering the window buttons, so I have to move the panel for closing the window.
I don’t find the possibility to handle this issues...

For your problem regarding windows going below the panel, right-click on the panel and select properties.
Find an option named "Don't reserve space on borders" and uncheck it.

Thanks agmg.
It's ok. But can you (or someone else) teach me how to add in the panel the launcher icons for browsers, Synaptik, terminal, file manager... etc.? Or the Trashcan?
I dont use icons because I like a clean desktop.
Or how to add Doky on the desktop? I downloaded it but don't find the way to use it.
Every time need an application I have to open the App Menu an scrolling down to open something. Right click -> Add to panel (like in KDE) don't works in Xfce.
So, how do I do to add the apps to panel? Or to use Doky?
Maybe Cairo-dock might be a better choice? Or an other similar app?  :( :-[

Guess WBar is a better option as dock bar for Xfce.
Docky pulls a lot of packages in your install.

I use a second panel for my application launchers, put it on top of the screen and set it to "Auto hide". No need to install third-party launchers.

I thought in WBar but this time I looked for something that remains visible, not covered by any opened window.
Cairo-dock is... hmmm... Don't like it.
I put AWN; not too convincent...
Docky appears as installed in the Menu App but can't acces it; it simply doesn't open.

agmg
also, yours is a nice coise. But I can't addbrowsers, Trashcan, Skype... et.
No way to do it!...

You add a launcher and then edit the launcher to start the program you want...
