It has onboard sound from the motherboard - N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller.

Is this what you were looking for?

in my netbook i have a alc295, i don't have much channels there but i can add some to that list, i see on that list volume levels for a 2.1 setup with front left, right and center, master and pcm and other channels, you could try unmutting all channnels and trying again with vlc the way i described before

also see if kmix mixer is not showing all the channels and what others you can add to set volume levels right

Hello,
The problem with onboard motherboard sound is the functions can be switched using software in windows but not always in Linux.
If you don't actually have all the sound ports on your motherboard the line out and mic line are changed to rear L/R and Center/LFE via software.
On some motherboards  L/R and Center/LFE are achieved  using accessory sockets switched by software therefore allowing Line out and Mic to be used also at the same time. When you set motherboard sound up while using windows you usually have the choice of using software on the cd that comes with the motherboard that is supplied by the sound chip manufacturer or generic windows drives/software.Some or all the options may be available with one but not the other.I found the easiest way round these issues was to use a PCI sound card that comes with all the ports necessary and disable the on board sound of the motherboard in the bios.I suppose you could leave the motherboard sound enabled but I found the options available with phonon and alsa mixer all combined totaly bewildering.

Glad it's not just me.. Too bad re on-board sound if that's where the trouble is. I've considered sound cards redundant for years, at least for my ears.

Hello,
Modern sound cards have seen big improvements, reduction of components and size etc.Even the cheapest boards come with six chanels/5:1 sound at really low prices. The chips used on these cards are usually manufactured by the same companies that produce the sound chips for on board sound motherboards. The sound quality is good enough except for people with golden ears.It does look like you should be able to get 5:1 sound working looking at your screen grab. You appear to have two chips Intel and Realtek running at the same time though???

This might help to get you going

http://www.halfgaar.net/surround-sound-in-linux

or this one

When using PulseAudio check that the config file is set for 5.1

/etc/pulse/daemon.conf

usually last line ....  should read

default-sample-channels = 6      (default is default-sample-channels = 2 for stereo)

I thought this had been mentioned earlier, but did not find it .....  so sorry if this is duplication  ;)
