Can't install LibreOffice because NC and netcat are broken in synaptic

When I run LibreOffice Manager the install process starts then ends in Testing reffering me to /tmp/LO_STEP00.log.
The log suggests nc is a broken package.
Synaptic list nc and netcat as broken packages with solid red tag.
I tried unmarking nc and netcat in Synaptic but the status of broken returns.
Suggestions?

Try selecting in Synaptic "Fix Broken Packages".

Yes, I tried fixing broken packages.
Reload in Synaptic brings up no errors.
Marking all upgrades displays a dialog-The chosen action... and to be upgraded is nc.  When I chose to mark it this error displays-
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
Fix broken packages resets the framework so nothing displays as broken.
Reloading repeats the above steps.

What repository are you using?
Did you try updating using a different repo? (heanet.ie)

To ensure synaptic has a clean database.

Just a coupla thoughts.

Ran the suggested routines.  No output from any of the routines suggesting errors.
Ran LibreOffice Manager again, failed with same error message.

Short cut the problem by downloading LibreOffice and installing it.
