I think they're trying to get enough copies out there to stir up some interest and generate a market. I doubt they can really compete with LibreOffice though.  Especially when they go back to charging.

Hmmm, don´t underestimate these guys. Made in Germany stands for something and it is really a nice suite. They started a few years ago giving away the last years version together with the donation thingy. Of course you´re right, this is a way to stir up some interest but hey ... it´s a nice way!  ;)

Last time they offered a free version a .pisi package (for Pardus) with these build files could be made.
The download link for Softmaker-2008 is in pspec.xml.

For Softmaker-2012 I get:
Quote
There are five different installation options. Please choose the one that is suitable for your system:

.rpm archive for 32-bit systems (for example SUSE Linux, Red Hat, and Fedora):
http://www.softmaker.net/down/softmaker-freeoffice-676.i386.rpm

.rpm archive for 64-bit systems (for example SUSE Linux 64 bit, Red Hat 64 bit, and Fedora 64 bit):
http://www.softmaker.net/down/softmaker-freeoffice-676.x86_64.rpm

.deb archive for 32-bit systems (for example Debian Linux and Ubuntu):
http://www.softmaker.net/down/softmaker-freeoffice_676-01_i386.deb

.deb archive for 64-bit systems (for example Debian 64 bit and Ubuntu 64 bit):
http://www.softmaker.net/down/softmaker-freeoffice_676-01_amd64.deb

.tgz archive with an installation script (works with all Linux distributions; also suitable when you do not have root access on the system):
http://www.softmaker.net/down/softmaker-freeoffice-676.tgz
And in personal Serial number: nnnnn-nnnnn-nnnnn-nnnnn-nnnnn is also in the email. To be used after the installation.
Softmaker-2008 does not have this serial number.

Don't dismiss so easily,  I gave them a throw-a-way name/email address to get a serial.
Then downloaded the .tgz archive for a local installation.

The whole thing runs to about 90 MB, which is a bit smaller than LO.  It did open a LO .odt file no problem, although no great testing done.  Looks ok. Maybe some gentle hacking to get rid of some png 'adverts'

Might be worth considering for a small installation.

The thing that keeps me with LO is PDF & 'LO Draw', which has turned into a really good pdf editing application.

Deleted Softmaker now, do not need 2 wordprocessors at present.

Another cool thing that LO has is the Base program.  i haven't tried it since LO took it on, but if it has gotten as good as the rest of the suite, it must be pretty good by now.  It even has the ability to create and access Pgsql.

Have a super evening!  :)
