welcome to localhost.localdomain
« on: December 16, 2012, 12:56:05 PM »
I can not get to my desktop and i reinstall twice to make sure that it wasn't something that i did.

After i reinstall i do updates using synaptic and for the second time now i have a box saying "welcome to localhost.localdomain" and i can not do anything else with it.

I tried to find an answer on the forum but so far none are going to help me because i have to get into my system to do changes and i can't.

Is there a username and password that i can use to pass that welcome screen or do i have to reinstall a third time?

Thanks

Were any messages given after the upgrade?
Were there error messages during boot up?

Is there a prompt after "welcome to localhost.localdomain?" If so, enter startx.

Some messages were there but there always messages after the updates since i'm using pclos so i didn't make anything of it. No messages on bootup, only that box with the welcome screen and nothing else so i can not enter any text or anything.

ghostbunny, i didn't know anything about that before, first time that i have a problem installing pclos since many years. :)

So you ignore all messages?

Did you press the Esc key at the start of the boot process and watch?

Neal ManBear, i did ignore all messages, been doing it for a long time, never had problems before with it.

I didn't press the Esc key at the start of the boot process. I will try that and see what it does but i don't know if it's going to work i'm dual booting with 7.

I reinstall pclos KDE, now do i have to get the latest pae kernel before doing anything.

This is what i have in the synaptic.

http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/
pclinuxos/2010
main updates nonfree kde4 games xfce4

I know that somewhere it is recommended to remove the number 4 after kde to have only kde...what do you recommend.

That indicates that you are installing an old ISO.  You  will not be able to successfully update from anything older than 2012.08.  Your best bet is to download the latest ISO (2012.12).

Working for now, did the updates and install the latest pae kernel and no problem. Is there a 64 bit version?

Still in testing. I'm running it as I type this, and it's all good. We have not yet reached the point of a final public release, but we have certainly been making continuous headway. Like everything PCLinuxOS related, it will be ready when it's ready. ;)

The latest ISO indicated on the download page for KDE is 2012.08 as of today. I was going to download 2012.12 if it existed. I just downloaded the 2012.08 ISO last week because I saw the very same problem the OP was having when I did a fresh install for a friend and I was using 2012.02 and saw the very same problem after doing the update.

I think maybe it is time for me to do a fresh install on my box because I am starting to get some unpleasant behavior on it. I have been updating this box since I built it about 4+ years ago.
