Blog - Important breaking news about Lightworks for Linux

by  David Shapton - 14 Dec 2012 - redshark

Big news for news for Linux fans: Editshare has today announced it aims to release a public Beta version before the end of the first quarter of 2013. Now, everyone will be able to try Lightworks for Linux

When the Beta version is released, it will be a historic occasion for Linux, because it will be the very first time that a professional NLE has been available for the Linux platform. It is also important for video editors generally because this is part two of the rollout of Lightworks across three platforms: Windows, Linux and OS X - giving editors and content creators previously unheard-of flexibility to work on the platform of their choice - or across all three if they want to!

The Linux Beta program follows the successful private (i.e. closed) Alpha test, which thanks to intensive and detailed reporting from enthusiastic Alpha testers has taken Lightworks for Linux to an advanced phase.

The Linux Beta will include a friendlier licensing system, which it is hoped will avoid the frustration caused by the exising one.

The Linux Beta version will have all the facilities of the Pro version with some minor limitations.

Lightworks Global Product Manager Matt Sandford told RedShark:

"We are very hopeful that we can meet this target, but there is significant work still to be done on improving the licensing to give users a better experience when they install the software."

Like the Windows version, at the end of the Beta phase, Lightworks for Linux will be available as Free and Pro downloads. The Pro version will allow users to work with professionally licensed codecs such as AVC Intra and Red files.

Lightworks for Linux : First-ever official full-length demo

RedShark's very lucky because we share an office building (and a parent company, EditShare) with one of the most talked-about products in the world of video: Lightworks.

We're editorially independent of Lightworks and EditShare, but it certainly helps when we can can sit down next to the developers, product and technical support managers and say "how about making an exclusive for RedShark: the first-ever full-length official demo of Lightworks for Linux"

The Beta release of Lightworks for Linux is now very close. Until now, only the Alpha version has been seen by anyone outside the Lightworks team, but that was a closed-community test.

We asked Matt Sandford, Lightworks' Global Product manager to introduce the video:

Here's the first official video of the only professional-level video editor for Linux. We wanted to show this is a world class editor with all the power of Lightworks from the Windows version now available on the Linux platform.  This is the next step in creating a true multi-platform editing system with the Mac version coming soon.

Kudos to Iain Churchill-Coleman from the Lightworks Technical team for putting this fantastic demo together for us.

Finally, don't forget that the first public preview of Lightworks for OS X, the Mac OS, will be at the EditShare booth at NAB this April

Lightworks on Linux

We have had a very successful Linux Alpha program and although we will narrowly miss the targeted release date at the end of Q1 we will be making the Linux Public Beta, which includes a much improved licensing scheme, available on 30th April 2013. We have been listening to users and the current licensing scheme has not been up to their expectations.

The new scheme will be much simpler and easier to use and will be based around signing in to the application using your user ID and Password for www.lwks.com This same licensing scheme will be rolled out across all three platforms over the coming months. We will be trialling this new licensing scheme with the Linux Alpha Team over the next few weeks.

Lightworks Linux Public Beta Is Now Available To Download

Today we are releasing the first Linux Public Beta version of Lightworks, this means any user wishing to test the Linux Beta version can do so by visiting the link below, filling out the short form and agreeing to the Terms and Conditions:

www.lwks.com/betas-linux

This Beta version contains the new EditShare Licensing Service (ELS) which will allow users to sign in to the application using their Lightworks Username and Password (an internet connection MUST be present on the system) When signing in each new user will be automatically given a complimentary seven day Pro license to test the Pro version of Lightworks, this is renewable at the end of the seven days by simply signing back in to the application.

The Linux Beta does not include trial AVID DNxHD licensing due to the restrictions imposed by AVID.

We will shortly be adding the option to the Lightworks Shop www.lwks.com/shop for users to purchase an AVID DNxHD license specifically for the Linux version.

There are still some limitations with the current Linux build which can be found on the Linux Beta page above.

Many thanks to all those Linux Alpha Testers that continually submitted feedback and helped get the Linux version to Beta stage.

Edit

Linux Beta testers

Thank you for your interest in joining the Linux Public Beta Program. In order to join the program please read and agree to the Terms and Conditions and submit your details below. You will then be emailed further instructions with regards to submitting feedback on issues you encounter. We need the best quality feedback possible, so please DO try to contribute!

We reserve the right to remove inactive testers from the team at any time.

Lightworks has only been developed and tested on Ubuntu 12.04, 12.10, Mint 13, Mint 14 and Lubuntu 13.04. Other distributions may work, but have not been tested. You're welcome to try with Ubuntu-varients, e.g. 'Edubuntu' - do please let us know the results!
