Upon re-examining the source website for the driver I note that it is to be used on debian based linux, (ubuntu, fedora). I bet that's the problem.

No that is not the problem. The tarball contains both .deb (for debian etc.) and rpm (for Fedora etc.) The printerdriver and scannerdriver are available in rpm and OK. For some mysterious reasons however there is no .deb or .rpm package for the cnyfilter-source-3.40-1 package. (The package we have available in the repo´s seems too old to support this printer) It does come with instruction how to create a rpm package but that is of course above the head of many.
I think we should ask the packagers to create this for us?  (request new package). This thing is the bottle neck preventing you installing that printer successfully imho.

Well, I finally got this printer to work in my recent installation of KDE PClosOS.....but the quality of the print is really lacking.  The printer was giving output equal to that of my XP installation before I updated to the latest version of PClosOS, but now not so much....irregular vertical lines on a form, with ragged, uneven alpha numeric characters.  Not quite sure how to request or install the package "cnyfilter-source-3.40-1", but I know I didn't use it in my original installation of the driver for the earlier (pre synaptic problem) version of PClos.

Requested meanwhile  ;)

I also can´t explain as to why your printer previously worked. I only see during installing the drivers that it is asked for. So my best guess is it WILL work once we got this cnyfilter-source-3.40-1 sorted out.

This is supporting the following printers, one among those is yours:

mp250
mp280
mp495
mg5100
ip4800
mg5200
mg6100
mg8100

I managed to locate a tar file with the name "cnyfilter-source-3.40-1" online.  I'm just not sure that it doesn't need to be tailored to PCLOS by someone. When I extracted it it contained 21 folders with numerical names (356,359,360.....and so on) as well as 4 text files and a couple of other files. None of the numbered folders was labeled 495. I don't know how or even if I should try to use this tar.

Yes, got the same here. Problem is that tarball doesn´t contain deb or rpm packages like the drivers tarball. It needs to be packaged. There must be a way to install this stuff anyway but that might be beyond our skills. For packagers, instructions are there as well which should help speeding things up. Hence I have asked for adding this one. If we try to go on anyway we might break up something we shouldn´t in PCLinuxOS. So let´s hope a packager in Christmas mood will come across the request soon.  ;) (Merry Christmas)

BTW, these numbers of the given folders represent types of printers like this:

mp250                       356
mp280                       370
mp495                       369
mg5100                      373
ip4800                        375
mg5200                      374
mg6100                      376
mg8100                      377

I found a possible solution here: http://blog.obnoxium.org/2011/04/canon-pixma-mp495-works-with-linux/

It works with "Linux" (some of the many distro´s) but not yet with PCLinuxOS. We need the cnijfilter-common_3.40-1_i386 package done (requested).

Maybe "alien" can convert the available here (i.e. cnijfilter-common_3.40-1_i386.deb) .deb packages but my first trials on this failed (needs rpmbuild). This is and remain packagers stuff and these guys have now bacon, turkey, coffee, cheese and what more on mind during the holidays, rightfully  :D :D :D
