Canon MP495 (Not really a new topic)
« on: December 14, 2012, 04:30:53 PM »
A year or so ago I installed (with the help of several members of this forum) a device driver for my Canon MP495 printer.  In my previous thread I found a link to the method of installing the driver (got this driver from an asian website).  As I recall I used terminal command line to accomplish this install from the aforementioned link...in the thread Old Pollock gave the proper method of doing the install and everything worked out great.

Recently in an effort to get my Synaptic Package manager to work properly again I downloaded and re-installed KDE PCLOS from the latest release.  Upon trying to use my printer, however, I found that all needed to be done again. I wish I had been clever enough to print out the procedure Old Pollock had described because when I attempted to redo the install I found that the referenced thread had been removed from the board.  Can anyone help me get back to the install syntax?
In everything give thanks

Does the file you downloaded have .rpm extension?

Hmm, I found only the MP496 drivers etc. on the asia site of Canon. Sure you got a MP495?  Or remember you used this driver?  Might work.

Anyway it is all here for a start:  Canon Asia - drivers MP496

You`ll need the scangear and printer driver in rpm version.

Installing should be easy done in a konsole. rpm -i filename.rpm   You should be root I guess.

Hope this helpszzz  ;D

Yes, the file is .rpm. I used this file before and only need the terminal syntax to install the driver.

Yes, the file is .rpm. I used this file before and only need the terminal syntax to install the driver.

Try this:

Open a konsole
become root (su > enter, password > enter)

cd to where your driverfiles are. (i.e. cd /home/username/Downloads)

Then run command  rpm -i filename.rpm   (where filename is your drivers name) for each driver.

That should do it.

If the ls command tells you there are only the 2 rpm`s in your (download)folder you can also run rpm -i *.rpm and both drivers will be installed.

Hope this helps.

When I try to install using "rpm -i *.rpm  I get the following:
file /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonij from install of cnijfilter-common-3.40-1.i386 conflicts with file from package cnijfilter-common-2.70-1pclos2011.i586

there are 2 rpm files in my download directory the main file and the common file....neither have the name cnijfilter-common-2.70-1pclos2011.i586!

Try rpm -Uvh instead of -i

well, the command rpm -Uvh worked insomuch as it said it installed the two rpm files.  When I try to print, however, I show only one printer driver the "generic-CUPS-PDF-Printer" driver...no mention of MP495.

I assume you tried to install the printer through PCC > hardware > Set up printer etc.

Strange, did you do a reboot with printer disconnected then connect (USB)?  IF it isn´t found it could be the USB cable or .... ya what? Printer is switched on? The printer should be detected. Give it some time. The driver should be searched for then (probably manual) and ... it "should" work!

What about the scanner? tried to install that one?

(Hope we got the right driver... there is a MP486 driver available also. I just don´t know what covers what but it seems you remember this MP496 driver as the one you used).

Well, first of all after your comments about the MP496 driver I realized that what I was trying to install was not the driver I installed originally (last year). I went back to the Asia website and found one for the MP495. It was named "cnijfilter-mp495Series-340-1-rpm.tar.gz". This is the file I installed with your help.  You were correct in that when I rebooted the system the MP495 driver showed up in my printer configuration. It does print but I still must not have the correct driver as the output is not good quality as it was when I installed it last year.  Perhaps I can stumble upon the correct driver again if I persist. If I do I should be able to get the driver installed now. Thanks for your help.

Well good thing here is that you found the correct driver (I didn´t see it at the Canon Asia site to my surprise). The correct driver is of course the way to go. Good luck!

When I look in usr/lib/cups/filter/ the file pstocanonij is missing. when I try re-installing the drivers the error message is:
[root@localhost packages]# rpm -Uvh *.rpm
Preparing...                ########################################### [100%]
        package cnijfilter-common-3.40-1.i386 is already installed
        package cnijfilter-mp495series-3.40-1.i386 is already installed
Where would I locate the installed files in order to remove and re-install them? I am the one who removed the pstocanonij file in an attempt to completely re-install the driver.

To remove the packages. That is where Synaptic (package manager) is for. Remove it completely and start over again. Obviously you got now the correct drivers. You must be close!

Well, I may or may not have the correct drivers, but when I used the synaptic package manager to "completely remove the driver" it failed to remove the common file.  I know this because when I tried to re-install using rmp -Uvh *.rpm it report the common file was already installed.  I replaced the "usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonij by copying it from my live CD, but now the printer is not printing at all.

What a trouble this simple driver install gaves you!
But .... either you have the correct driver should be easy to see for you... If it is MP495 it IS the correct driver. You mentioned this here and there. I cannot find that driver!!  (Crazy but through) I can only find so far the MP496 driver. Can you send me a link as to where I can download it?  If so I can install it here and see what is happening as this remains for a bit just guessing. During a normal install no fiddling with usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonij is needed. I would love to see the install here which possibly comes with some answers. These Canon sites worldwide are really something. I found the MP495 drivers on the Canon Philippines site but guess what: Only for Windows and Mac. They obviously have no clue of Linux or are not permitted by the Uncle´s Bill and Steve....  :P
